Alternator Whine... Greasing Bearing Help?!

Recommended Posts

So I just took off my belt to find my pulley tick, and found the alternator bearing is squeaking... it is a brand new parts one from advanced auto and has lifetime warranty, it actually started whining pretty soon after getting the alternator. Can I just put some grease in the front of the alternator? Or do I need to open it up? I don't want to ruin anything by adding grease/oil to the alternator itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!

The alternator bearings are sealed units, so any grease applied externally will not get into the bearing. With the lifetime warranty from Advance, I would exchange it for another one. It sounds like yours has defective bearings in it.

Any chance it's an idler rather than the new alternater?

well my engine tick is either the idler or tensioner, I think the tensioner because I took the belt off and spun each pulley by hand, and the only ones that made any noise when spun by hand was the tensioner and the alternator. The alternator made a squeal/k when moved and the tensioner made kind of a rougher grind noise. I had been having the alternator whine for almost the entire time i've had it. And just found my picture of the receipt so i'll be exchanging that This week, hopefully tomorrow! Thanks for all your help you guys!
