2003 4.8 Sierra chip programmer

I'm looking for a quick and easy way to get a bit more giddy up out of my 4.8 03. So I've been looking into a programmer.
I'm new to adding mods but have turned wrench's for years but just for repairs and maintenance. 

Is a programmer worth the money? I like the idea of being able to change the program when I need to.
What kind of gains am I looking at? Which brand? 

Any other inexpensive mods like a free flow muffler? What would you guys recommend?

I would go with a custom tune from black bear or similar. With gas engines you really cant gain too much just from a tuner
