Custom air intake system

I've got the K&N replacement filter on my truck and have been wanting to get more clean, cool, air into it. The stock air intake is very constricting and I was wanting to run some 2" Black PVC piping up and connect into the box. Hopefully just to get more cool air like a ram air setup. Or another option I was looking into was to take the filter box completely out and construct some kind of bracket to hold the K&N filter in place, to allow a lot more air to it. But then alot of the air will be heated from the engine. If I were driving down the road, would the air coming into the engine bay be enough to lessen the effect of the heat coming from the engine? Just wondering benefits/downfalls of both ideas. I've seen K&N FIPK's in magazines and could easily make something similar to separate the engine heat from the filter. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, that's what I was thinking about doing. Do you have any regrets? I was thinking about running the black PVC from both sides and connect them with a y pipe, so I'll be forcing more air into the box. Thanks, Chris

No regrets! Anything you can come up with to get more cool air in would help. :wtf:

While we are talking about this subject, I noticed that when I installed the K&N FIPK it came with a heat shield. After installing the heat shield I noticed that there is still a gap that is open to the engine compartment from the bottom. Wouldn't you think that heat would still be getting in from there? Since my truck has a 3" body lift the radiator pipe is actually below this opening. I'm wondering if I should fabricate some type of bottom out of thin metal to block this or is it something not to worry about. Mountaineer Tom did you notice this on yours as well?

Today I took the stock filter box out and just clamped my K&N filter on. Fabricated a quick mounting bracket until this weekend and I love the way it feels. I can definitely tell a difference in throttle response, don't know actual gains, but the SOTP gain is nice! Once I relocate the battery to the other side of the engine bay I will be able to start my "ram" air setup. At WOT, the sound is amazing! I'll get some pics of my finished product. Thanks, again, Chris
