Airbag light random

Noticed other day the airbag light came on, with dic message, service airbag soon.

It'll come on then go off after a couple seconds, then after a few seconds come back on, repeat.

This is with a passenger, not sure if there would have been a difference without a passenger.

Out of my own curiosity, I turned the passenger airbag off and the warning/ message didn't come back on. Till I turned the airbag back on.  

Thoughts?
