locking steering wheel

I was just wondering, does your 02 silverado steering wheel lock. Mine does not and I took it in to the dealer. First they said that it should lock then latter when I came to pick up the truck they said no, that the 02 no longer lock. Are they pulling my leg, any feedback please.

I just went out and checked. My 02 Z71 does not lock. But my 02 reg cab does.

Maybe it's because the reg cab is a standard tranny.

Funny, I never noticed that it didn't lock until now.

You got me.

Not to be rude - but don't any of you have owner's manuals? They all state how the various key positions on the ignition/steering column work.

Starting in 2001, it appears that the LOCK position - locks the ignition and transmission and on manual tranny's only the steering column. Prior to 2001, LOCK locked the steering column on both auto's and manual's. The 2003 owner's manual is a bit weird because it says it locks the manual tranny? (how - missprint?)

Yeah we read the manual, but it's just as convient to ask here on the forum or we're at work and don't have the manual around and wanted to know at that moment.:nono:

My 2000 Z71 locks, but when I helped a buddy install the JP Customs steering wheel controls in his 2000 GMC 2500 HD, his did not lock.

I thought it was just a 2500/3500 thing?

Yeah, you have to know how to bypass the new security to get the truck started, or are you stealing it by tow? As for my dads '03 it does not lock and the reason the dealer gave was that security bit.

I have not heard a reason for them to quit having them lock! My 03 Sierra did not lock and my 03 Sierra Denali does not either. took a little getting used to! as for getting one ripped off well seems a new twist is for them to pick out a vehical, go to a dealer with its Vin # which is normally perfectly visible. Dealers may be able to make a key from the vin # I am keeping a small paper card infront of mine!
