VR Velocity Stack

Hey guys been a while since I've been here. Since my last vist, I have finished my stereo install, installed some Crane gold roller rockers, and some other goodies.

 

I now have 4,000 miles since I built the truck and its running solid. The cam is not the best for off-the-line torque or gas mileage so I'm looking for ways to improve those. I saw this on Trucks TV today and wanted to see what the deal is with it?

I was about to order one, but I decided to check here rather than open up my wallet first. Here's what I found:

 

First the only person on the forum who has any proof that the thing works is QuickSS and here is what he posted:

Guys I am new to your forum but I own a 02 Z-06 vette and it has a Vararam VR-1B ram air system on it and that thing works so well that when I heard about this part for my brand new SS Truck I told them to send me one to try ASAP!

 

I had the chance to run the truck tonight at the track, the weather was not good and since I was in my truck I did not bring my weather station this time, but trust me it was hot and humid.

 

Here are the results of my runs

Stock : 1/4 mile

14.83 @ 92.8MPH

14.88 @ 93.1MPH (some wheel spin on this one)

14.84 @ 92.7MPH

 

I then installed the VR part in the staging lanes ( it took all of maybe 2 min max )

the lines moved fast tonight.

 

VR velocity stack runs

14.73 @ 94.8 MPH (lots of wheel spin on this run )

14.58 @ 95.1 MPH

 

No more runs for the night, but I was able to see and feel the difference, not to mention that I was now having to drive the truck out of the hole to keep from spinning the tires.

 

The part easily gave me 2 tenths and +2 MPH in the 1/4 mile.

 

I am going to call them on Monday now and get one for my Vette, at 50 bucks you can't beat it.

I will also be buying an intake system to try on this truck with some back to back testing, I will post the results as soon as I decide on the system and get it all done, if anyone is interested.

Then I found this at the Vararam website in their testimonial section:

My K&N air filter kit didn't even do that!

Now something seems fishy to me. Is it just me, or does it sound like QuickSS is a fraud who is trying to advertise for the VR stack?

 

Does anybody know if this product works? Anybody tried it on a 5.7L Vortec?

 

For my application, it is $29.95 plus $9.95 for shipping with the 30 day garauntee which is not too expensive, but I'd rather not go through the hassle if someone has already found that it doesn't work.

We just started advertising this product a few days ago and I can say that they have been very, very popular. VaraRam makes one of the best inductions on the market for the C5/Z06 and they have done alot of testing with the Velocity stack. I saw it on TNN a few weeks ago and was impressed with the gains and how easy/imexpensive this product is. I'll be installing it in one of my trucks when our first batch arrives this week.

In Truck applications we have seen gains of up to 22+ ft/lbs of tire-shredding torque throughout the power curve where you can use it! As tested in a 2004 Silverado 5.3 V8. In LS1 car applications, gains of up to 13 rear wheel HP have been seen (03 C5 Corvette).

The VR velocity stack was designed to reshape the factory throttle-body in order to boost air flow velocity at each given RPM. The overall shape of each VR velocity stack has undergone some of the most intensive airflow research that we have ever done to produce the best overall shape for each engine's airflow requirements. In order to achieve this we:

 

Created a balanced air stream between the upper and lower portion of the throttle-body blade = more airflow.

 

We then changed the shape of the entrance to build up a higher velocity charge at each given RPM. This allows the intake charge force in the manifold to be increased = increased throttle response and added torque and power under the curve where you can use it.

 

Streamlining the intake was also achieved by directing the air in a controlled fashion to reduce any power robbing turbulence over the AIR and PCV valve to maximize the overall efficiency of the factory throttle-body's overall diameter.

 

Each velocity stack features a varied plenum volume whether in front of the throttle-body or in overall length to help them boost the primary and secondary pressure waves during the cylinder firing process = a tuned and more balanced induction system giving you much better overall combustion efficiency = more power and better gas mileage.

It is obvious to me that QuickSS does not even own an SS. I also note that he has not been back to make any more posts beyond that one. So I would discount anything QuickSS has to say.

 

Tbyrne is a reputable person, so I would be inclined to listen to him. Just keep in mind that most companies selling mods, overstate the gains. Testing methodology is suspect in most cases.

Well, I'm still waiting on an e-mail from tbyrne on the price from him. I think I'm just gonna go ahead and buy it from the VR website because at least I will know that I get the money back garauntee.

Guys I ordered one today for my truck and I will also honestly tell yall if it really makes a difference or if it is just a fake advertisement,It should be here the latest tueday.I dont see how it acually will make difference,but we will see.

I got mine today. For anyone who has a throttle body spacer, be aware you will have to trim your fan shroud in order to get the stock intake tube back on the throttle body. It's not a big deal, I just trimmed it with a new razor blade knife. Had to trim about 1/2" deep at the center, tapering out to zero about 6-7" on each side. You can't see it once the intake tube is back in place.

 

Won't take it out for a spin until tomorrow so I won't have any impressions until later.

Well I got mine Friday, but they sent me the wrong one. The one they sent me is about 5~10mm too large in diameter. I got some pics of it, just gotta get them on the web so I can show you.

Sorry for the lack of updates guys. I talked to a guy over at Vararam on Tuesday. He was the designer/manufacturer guy I guess.

 

The reason it doesn't fit my truck is because '96-'97 Vortec 350s had a slightly smaller ID throttle body than the '98-'00 Vortec 350s, 2-3mm to be exact.

 

The VR stack was designed on a '98 truck, thus is too big for my throttle body. As I said, I talked to the guy there on Tuesday and he expected the new mold for the early TBs to be in that day or Wednesday at the latest. He said if it came in on Tuesday and everything went as scheduled, he would be shipping the replacements by Friday. I don't know if they went out today or not, but he told me that he would ad me to the list of replacements.

 

As for anybody who wants one of these VR stacks, I have one for a '98-'00 Vortec 350. He told me I could use it as a birds net if I wanted. Once I get my new one, I will gladly sell this old one. I paid $40.00 incl shipping, so if someone wants to make me an offer...

 

So, I will let you guys know when I get my VR stack and how much of a difference it makes.

If I was you, I'd call a few boneyards and find the newer larger throttle body and bolt that on, then put the VR stack on!

    • The oil filter has NOTHING To do with oil leak. GM sources parts from 1,000's of vendors and as with anything mass produced, flaws are unavoidable.    Putting a larger oil filter will do nothing but satisfy emotions. The OEM filter is designed for the engine and perfectly capable of handling the demands on the engine. Oversize oil filter could result in reduced flow and overall lower oil pressure.
    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling. 
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
