C0710 C0253 Explained.

Hey everyone!

Wanted to post a topic that I could link back to giving some insight on these codes. Some help with trouble shooting and some video's that could help explain.

First lets start with the 710 code. The DTC has actually 2 symptom codes that will come with it. A C0710 00 and C0710 5A.

C0710 00 - Steering Position Signal

C0710 5A - Steering Position Signal Plausibility Failure

A few things you should know before trying to diagnose these codes is that modifications to your vehicle can cause this issue. Lifting it ect can change the angle of the sensor and make the vehicle register that it is always turning when it is actually driving straight. Some vehicles have a steering angle sensor relearn that can help with this. Also hitting pot holes, curbs, ect can cause this as well. While you're driving if the steering wheel is not centered it will cause this condition, which could be caused by any of the things I was just talking about.

In order to diagnose this you will need a scan tool that will read ABS data.

Using the scan tool just make sure that the steering position sensor is at 0 when the steering wheel is centered and the wheels are centered as well.

If it is not at 0, Relearning or replacing the steering wheel position sensor will be necessary.

If it is at 0, turn the steering wheel and make sure it is not erratic. If it is, the relearn procedure will not help it and you will have to replace the sensor.

Checking the circuits at the connector.

Across terminals 1 (gray - 5 volt reference) and 2 ( Orange/black - Low reference - Ground ) You should have 5 volts.

If you have 5 volts, Disconnect the EBCM locater under the drivers door.

Test resistance end to end on the following wires

Steering Sensor Terminal 3 Yellow to Terminal 8 Yellow of EBCM

Steering Sensor Terminal 4 Blue to Terminal 29 Blue of EBCM

Steering Sensor Terminal 5 Tan to Terminal 30 Tan of EBCM

Steering Sensor Terminal 6 Green to Terminal 4 Green of EBCM

If all of the following test good, Replace the Steering wheel position sensor.

Hope this helps. I will link the Video of the replacement below.
