Has anyone had luck programming a new key fob with the instructions in the manual? I have a 2018 Yukon XL SLT with one remote and key and the 2nd remote was missing when I purchased but have the 2nd key. Dealer got me a new remote and cut the key and is mailing as I don't want to drive an hour one way. Just want to make sure I can program it like the manual says.

Yes.  As long as you are push button start.

Programming without Two Recognized Transmitters (Keyless Access Vehicles Only)

If two currently recognized transmitters are not available, follow this procedure to program up to eight transmitters. This feature is not available in Canada. This procedure will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. The vehicle must be off and all transmitters to be programmed must be with you.

  1. Remove the vehicle key from the transmitter.
  2. Insert the vehicle key into the key lock cylinder on the driver door handle; then turn the key counterclockwise, to the unlock position, five times within 10 seconds.

The Driver Information Center (DIC) displays REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.

  3. Wait for 10 minutes until the DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN, then press ENGINE START/STOP.

The DIC will again display REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.

  4. Repeat Step 3 two additional times. After the third time all previously known transmitters will no longer work with the vehicle. Remaining transmitters can be relearned during the next steps.

The DIC display should now show READY FOR REMOTE # 1.

  5. Place the new transmitter in the transmitter pocket/insert.
  6. Open the center console storage area and the storage tray. The transmitter pocket/insert is in front of the storage area next to the center console storage area between the driver and front passenger seats.
  7. Press ENGINE START/STOP. When the transmitter is learned, the DIC display will show that it is ready to program the next transmitter.
  8. Remove the transmitter from the transmitter pocket/insert and press K or Q on the transmitter.

To program additional transmitters, repeat Steps 5–7.

When all additional transmitters are programmed, press and hold ENGINE START/STOP for approximately 12 seconds to exit programming mode.

  9. Return the key back into the transmitter.

2017 and newer GM you need two existing programmed keys to add a 3rd.  If you lost one or only got one when getting the truck, you must take it to the dealer to have them program it.

For me, even while I am having two programmed keys and to program the third, I was not able to start with the procedure as described in the manual. 2018 Tahoe
Couldn’t figure out what was the problem

I changed my original response to OP as I noticed he had an SLT Yukon.  Is yours push button or keyed?

I realize these are older posts- hoping someone is still here that can help.  I'm trying to program a 2nd remote- I have one. 2017 Yukon XL Denali- push button start. My owners manual gives me the same instructions that I find online, I'm going with the have no fobs option- but I cannot get past step one. After I turn the key 5 times counter clockwise- NOTHING HAPPENS. I've tried it with the door open, the door shut, the door locked, unlocked, the key fobs in the cup holder, key fobs in the house- Im stuck.  I've been trying to do this for about 5 hours now and am ready to shove my head through a window. It's like my vehicle just doesn't recognize the 5 key turns. And I checked- first number is a 1 in the VIN which means it was made in USA right? What am I missing???

2021 Silverado 1500 RST with 6.2.  I am having a similar issue. I had one key fob, tried to program a second one. Got to the message that says ready to learn remote 1. Placed new fob in pocket between the cup holders. Press start/ stop button and nothing happened. Ended up with the original fob not even working. The original fob would not do anything. Could not start the truck, etc.  called mobile locksmith, they worked for like two hours, using programmers, their fobs, the gm computer, etc. No Luck! Had trucked towed to dealership. Now five days later, the dealership can’t get anything fobs to program or work. Was able to get truck started once they said but nothing else.  Have had GM engineers investigating as well. Anyone have this happen? Any ideas? Bout ready to just wire a key type ignition in, lol..
