Test drove an 04 F150 XLT today

:lol: I realize this may not be the place but...

 

I was curious with all the hype on the tube lately. Wasn't overly impressed. I don't like the way Ford's engines sit way back into the firewalls.

 

Worth noting: I'm 5'9" and given the two inch higher bed siderails, it is not possible for me to put things into the bed of the truck w/o just dropping them over the side, big negative for me The tailgate assist feature is pretty cool.

I drove one the other day as well. (Friend bought one.)

 

Yeah, the bed is really too tall......But.....I gotta tell you guys.....I liked that truck.

 

Rode really well, I think they look bada$$...More like a mans truck!! The interior fit/finish was pretty d@mn good. Not to mention how quiet it is in there.

 

It's a good thing that F*** still has some learning to do when it comes to comfort...I drove a fully loaded (leather etc) ex-cab short bed, and hated the seats, it was pretty durned uncomfortable within about 15 minutes.

 

Don't get me wrong, I am die-hard Chevy (why I'm here :lol: ) but I think F*** is going to do verrry well with this truck.

Not to disagree with you wingnut but I thought the new F150s looked worse, they look more foreign now, narrower or something! Just my Opinion.

They look like the Explosions and all the other crappy SUVs that Furd puts out. And what the hell is with the floor shifter?? I thought a TRUCK (unless manual) was supposed to have a column shifter?? Just don't make sense to me. :lol::lol::lol:

I`ve seen a few around and don`t like the looks of the taller bed. I am looking forward to lining up with one on the road...

All I know is, GM needs to do something about the utter lack of torque below 4400 RPM in their new small-blocks.

 

I think variable valve timing is a really good idea for truck motors, I really do .... It helps keep their fuel consumption down as well as keep their torque up.

 

I dunno, I will be very curious to see what kind of real-world fuel economy the new F150 gets, with it being a heavier truck AND having a more powerful motor than it's GM equivelents.

I have mixed feelings about it. I love the looks, but I wish they had a higher stance. The build quality is good as well. However, my complaints are in the drivetrain department. NO MANUAL? NO 6 CYLINDER? Damnit Ford! At least you can still get them with a vynil bench seat.

So have you bumped your head or :confused: ..... They are more like up to par with Chevrolet. And as far as lack of low end I'll agree and say that I believe the old 350's had more but I left a 5.4L with no problems... and once about 1500rpms my truck will hold a gear pretty long... Must be somthing to do with that stick... :fume:

:withstupid::nono: I don't care for the exterior styling, BUT the interior styling is far superior to our GM's. The ford owners don't have to buy caddy gauges and denali trim to make the interior look nice. I'll give them that, but with the 5.3 I just can't lose.

    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.       
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.  
    • To me it honestly makes zero difference what filter you run. It's not a race engine, just a truck engine that's mostly bumming highways and it just needs a filter that filters oil.   The filter used to be a 7060 and the long version was a 7045. Now it's the newer updated filter that the K2XX trucks and newer run, the 100255 I believe if we are using napa numbers. Any of those filters is going to do the job.   I wouldn't overthink it, to me it makes no difference because those first filter numbers worked for 18+ years before the spec suddenly changed.
