Cool truck in the mountians picture

This is from a resent camping/fishing/4 wheeling trip up to Grizzy Lake near Bueuna Vista, CO.

The Grizzly Lake trail is a famous 5-mile long severe off-road trail that is known for being very challenging. It is quite the undertaking to make it to the top of Grizzly in any 4x4 let alone taking a full size rig to the top and back down without body damage, getting stuck or sliding off the side of the mountain on the 20 degree rocky cliffside climb. The end of the trail concludes at a beautiful lake where nice big trout can be caught.

How do you like the bed-tents? I've been looking at one of those for awhile, but wasn't sure if they're worth it? How is it in the rain?

How do you like the bed-tents?  I've been looking at one of those for awhile, but wasn't sure if they're worth it?  How is it in the rain?

I really like the bed tent a lot. I would much rather have a camper shell or a pop up camper but the tent does the job for the money. It is quick and easy to set up, stores in a little bag and helps keep out the rain as well as a tent can. As a matter of fact, it started raining shortly after this picture was taken. It rained all night then we woke up to about 3 inches of snow in the morning. If it weren’t for the air mattress we sleeping on we would have been laying on a wet floor.

But I have to ask, if you knew you were going to be on a severe off-road trail why did you not take the 2500HD? I mean, with IFS being infinitely superior to a SFA in every possible situation how could you leave it at home....

I like those bed tents as well! Always thought they'd be handy if it the ground was wet, snow-covered or rocky. A set of good all-terrain tires tolerate sharp rocks alot better than my back!

Yeah, it really tore the arse out of me to drive the bouncy old junker on a weekend getaway. Turning manual hubs, yanking transfer case levers, rowing a 4 speed manual transmission.....almost more than a guy living in the millennium should have to put up with. More than the HD, I should have taken the wife's Taco Z71...after all the Chevrolet commercials show Tahoe's on the top of mountains all the time.

Actually, no...we didn't even catch any fish! dang it! We wheeled around Lake Pomeroy and took a ride up the famous Tin Cup pass before heading up the Grizzly Lake trail. Any high ground clearance vehicle can make it up Tin Cup...very easy trail. By the time we made it to Grizzly Lake and set up camp it was getting pretty dark and cold. My buddy is in a wheel chair and crawling around on the ground at night fishing is not fun for him.

 

These pictures do not show jusice of just how difficult this trail is. Right at the trail head, you have to make a hard left turn around a huge tree in a deep creek then crawl up a four foot wall with wet tires. To my suprize, I made it up the wall with only hearing some minor scratching on the transfercase skid plate and front bumper. My truck was almost not tall enought too to crawl up the wall.

 

From that point, it gets worse as you are on a very narrow cliff side with a 20 degree climb for about a 1/4 mile over very large boulders. These boulders keep trying to bounce the truck off to the right (the cliff side). To make matters worse it was raining and water was running down the trail and I do not have a winch nor lockers. My tires were slipping and kicking boulders out left and right. I tell you, my rear end was pinching holes in the seat a few times. This and the steep wall climb were the most difficult parts other than that it was a lot of narrow corners and mud bogs. Wish I had more pictures of the action shots.

 

My buddy and I saw a few guys in built YJ's from Preditor 4x4 Shop based out of Colorado Springs. They commented how supprised they were to see a full size rig up there as this trail is usually a ATV, horse, hiking or Jeep trail.
