HMI 2.0 to HMI 2.5 do I need to upgrade?

How would I know what module I have installed in my 2016 GM 2500 Sierra HD? I started having problems with my trailer brake and then my parking assist system intermittently and still do so I took it to a local dealership where they told me... cryptically... that I needed to replace and program my hmi module. Seems they address saying to replace the existing 2.5 module for another one. They want to charge me $1200 to do this. I refused. I'm looking for answers instead and if I can reprogram this hmi module on my own or is there an expert in Houston who could do this much cheaper. Thanks
