Truck will not go into drive.

Any help would be highly appreciated. So I have a 2006 Silverado 1500 5.3 WT. a few months ago it started shifting from 1st to 2nd kinda hard. It would only happen when I’m in stop and go traffic. Other than that it’ll shift fine even starting up from a stop going up to speed. Now I’ve had 2 occasions where it didn’t want to shift into drive. The first time it happened it took a few seconds to shift into drive on its own. The second time it happened i just shifted it out and back into drive and I drive off and shifted fine after that. I was told by a mechanic that I’ll need my transmission rebuilt or just completely replaced. But I would like some input before anything. Thanks

Fluid level is good. No burning smell

Maybe next time it doesn't want to go in d, try and see if L2 makes it go.
