First trans change

This will be my first transmission change for my allison. My question is how much good am i doing by just changing the filters and fluid. Wouldn't having it flushed be better or will this be enough. And what do some of you do?

How many miles do you have on it? It should only need a spin on filter change unless you've got some mileage on it.

Just like any transmission, powerflushing is the best, but it'll survive just a normal fluid and filter change.

Any time you change fluids and filters it helps things last longer. Depends on the mileage. If you change the fluid often like 20k miles each time then a power flush isn't really needed. I know of a few that changed there fluid out to synthetic after they had 20k on their vehicle. Instead of the power flush they opted to change the fluid in the tranny once a year no matter what miles they put on it. They did this in a three year time frame. They looked at it this way, the cost for them to change the fluid out themselves was cheaper than having to do a flush and figured the fluid was switched over to to synthetic by the 3rd change. That is one way of doing it, that's for sure, spreads out the cost over time as well. :withstupid:

But if your not going the synthetic route, a simple fluid change like every 30k will keep things lasting a long time. I'm not familiar with the Ally schedule but would think that 30k is early in terms of when it is due by the owners manual. Like the saying goes, "An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure!"

well I cannot to a power flush in the drive way and I don't trust anyone with my truck so it just gets a fluid and filter change, if you pull the pan internal filter and cooler lines (just two easy little clips) there will not be much left of the old stuff, with the deep pan I am able to get 16qt's changed without flushing, supposedly there are only 15.9 in the whole thing but I know there still had to be a few in the bottom half of the torque converter

your first change you may want to get the deep allison pan and matching filter (used when this trany is installed in a medium duty truck (school buss ambulance etc)) , the stock internal filter is just a plastic screen the deep one actually has some filtering ability also the extra few quarts will help with cooling

I went overkill, changed over to the deep pan internal external and transynd early around 2K, just the external filter and fluid (transynd again) @25k and then internal/external and pan cleaning @ 45k with Mobil 1 ATF

I plan to start spacign them out a bit not and now that the trany has stopped making metal I dont think I will ever drop the pan and change the internal filter again

every time I put in transynd my truck really seams to loose power a few K later it would return also it sames to brown and loose its red color only after 20k

dropped in M1 this time, it is cheaper and makes the seat-of-the-pants dyno happier

interested in what any one else's experiences are between those 2 see if they are the same or if I am imagining things :jester:

Here is info I compiled from various posts on Allison part #'s (TurboAl, 77TransAm, hoot). If you visit the Allison website, you should be able to locate a dealer. BTW, the pan gasket is reusable and should not need replacing unless damaged:

Thanks for that info Raventi,

I've been contemplating doing the deep pan on mine as my trans has been running hotter than normal as of late. How much of a difference did you notice in temp reduction?

Posted

I just installed the deep pan on my truck this weekend. I was surprized by how much fluid came out. I poured in 13qts and I'm still about 1/4" away from the top of the HOT mark on the dip stick. Since I'm able to get that much out of the tranny, I will probably never do an official flush on it. Plus, I prefer to do all my own work.

In normal city traffic driving on a hot day, I would get about 190-200 on the temp gauge. Now I see about 170-180 with the deep pan. The extra 3.2 quarts should help with heat disappation. For fluid I used Castrol DexronIII, non synthetic and I will change it every 10K along with a new spin-on filter. I will probably only change the internal filter every 50K.

Posted

the temprature dropped about 10° on the gauge for the same situation but I also switched to synthetic at the same time so it is hard to say witch change had the majority of the effect, but having more surface area and more fluid cannot hurt for large temp drops I would look at the cooler it is a bit samll (in surface area) for the tranny

there is a guy on the diesel page that replaced the stock unit wuth a racing cooler but I dont realy want to go through that much work just yet, was thinking of just adding a small electric fan to the stock cooler but there is piece of grill structure in the way so it would have to be a very thin fan, that is another project I will do soon

one other thing if you are droping the pan (deep or shallow) remove the heat shield bolted on the right side of the tranny first (2 bolts) it makes it a lot easier and less messy (found out the hard way the first time) as the pan gets hooked on it

Posted

I didn't have any probelms with that shield. I'mn doing it right now BTW.

What I didn't realize is that there is still about a half quart or so of fluid still in the pan even though I drained it before removing.

Also, the new pan isn't so much more deeper (it is deeper) but it's flange isn't running on an angle like the stock shallow pan. That's where a key difference comes in. I will take pictures soon here to better explain.

hmm maybe my heat shieldt is shaped diffrent? the first time I did it I had to tilt the pan to get it past that heat shield and wound up wearing that half quart

oh by the dotn bo by the "full cold" band on the dip sick anymore, there is more volume of oil so therfore more rise when it is heated, start out with it elow the cold area and warm it up watching it rise, better to be two low than overserviced

Posted

I just pushed it out of the way enough.

I've cycled the truck three times and she's 3/4's of the way into the "HOT" cross-hatching.
