Window motor and cable busted!

I am going home after work last nite, and enjoying the beautiful weather. So I start to pull in the driveway and close the driver side window, and nothing happens! Then there is this horrendous grinding sound form inside the door. The window motor just went to HELL!

After removing all the door trim, the motor was extremely hot! Also the motor is very corroded, and the cable had busted. Inside of the door is clean not dirty or anything to indicate contamination. Examining the cable further, there are other areas where the cable is fraying, man this is a POS! Probably the same freaking cable maker who makes the cheap tailgate cables.

Well the dealer had one in stock for $220 and labor to install is $105! What a rip-off! I understand that the F-body guys have had this problem. Anybody else have this problem with their truck?

Also, just to let everyone know there are three different electric motors for the 01 Sierra's and Silverado's windows.

Yup, I have that prob, on both front windows.

Its only a matter of time, and everyone will need to replace.

Seems to me like a design flaw.

how many miles do you guys have on yours? My 00 Yukon was built on July 24th, 2000 -- the last production week for 2000s. Not sure if they might have fixed the problem by then, but if they didn't, I'd like to know when I might expect this problem to happen. I have 56K on mine now, and it's 3 years and 3 months old.

mine is a 2000 with about 60,000 miles.

Although I don't think milage has anything to do with it. Its just a crap design, but you won't hear GM admit that. Even after relpacing it'll do it again.

I have almost 60,000 mi on my 01 Sierra.

I also agree with Nonstop that it is a design problem, since the motor was pretty rusted, but the inside of the door panel is clean. Also, when the door panel was off I undercoated the inner door with a product from a local auto paint store.

Nonstop, I don't know about you but this first time that I have had problems with electric windows on any vehicle. I think next time, I will just buy the part and try to install myself.

since you just took the door apart, I have a question. Is the motor toward the front of the door or towards the rear? I have a set of regulators/motors I need to sell, but not sure which is left and right. It has been awhile sinceI took them off.

My '01 is ok for now, but a guy at work had both go within a month of each other, this was after 5 or 6 other out of warranty problems. He traded it for a 2003 ford. My warranty runs out in a couple of months, maybe I should fry the motors first!

Hey 99-2Door the driver side window regulator motor is behind the window track. The other way to tell is that the cable hub attached to the motor is facing the outer door skin, with the plastic spring guide facing the bottom of the inner door panel.

Well actually I meant is it toward the front/ toward hinge or back latch side of the door. Now that I think about it, the motor is probably located where the handle would be on a manual door, so toward the front. Thanks though.
