Charcoal Canister saturated!

Hey all, 

 

First time posting here. Had a question that I can't seem to find much luck on finding the answer on the internet. 

 

I have a 2001 Silverado with the 5.3. About two weeks ago I noticed a fuel smell coming from my truck. Living in MN, I figured the salt had rusted out a fuel line, but it turns out my charcoal canister is saturated and leaking. I have a new one to replace it with, however I want to find the source of the problem before wasting another one. Everything I've read, and my basic understanding, says there is a line that runs from the tank to the canister, and then two lines that run out of the canister- one that goes up to the engine to burn off some of the vapors, and another that runs to some filter out back. I can say with certainty that I have not overfilled the tank and pushed fuel from the tank into the canister. It sounds like my other options would be a clog somewhere in one of the lines, trapping the fumes in the canister to the point where they condensate and saturate into liquid gas instead of just vapors. I've never dealt with this issue before, and though I am somewhat of a backyard mechanic, I am certainly not ASE certified or anything of the sort. I'm just wondering if anyone has ran into this or what the culprit may be. I've read there are some valves or whatnot in those lines that may be bad, but again this is all new to me. I don't have any check engine lights or anything to scan, so it's basically a matter of trying to find some sort of EVAP schematic or someone who knows more about this than me to try to pinpoint exactly what the issue is. Any help would be appreciated.
