Why does my truck sit lower than most

Hello all,

I have another question about my 1999 GMC 2500. I know very little about GM products so please excuse me if this is a stupid question.

I have just purchased a used GMC 2500 4X4 ext cab sierra with a 6.0L engine. I have noticed that it sits lower than any other GMC ¾ ton truck. I count 6 springs on other 2500’s and only 5 rear leaf springs on mine; why? I plan on towing a 5th wheel trailer, will I need to invest in a different set of springs?

Thanks for your help,

If you a comparing your truck to an HD model, then it will sit lower. The HD's have a couple of inches body lift, and a higher GVW than a standard 2500.

Why does my truck sit lower than most, spring pack question on a 2500 Sierra

How much does your girlfriend weigh?

Seriously though, is your truck an HD?

Do you have any way of posting some pictures of it?

If its a 1999 2500 it is not a 2500HD since they didn't exist in 99.

Now in 99 they had both 7200 lb GVWR (light duty) and 8600 lb GVWR (heavy duty) 2500's, which will make a difference in height. The door tag will tell the story on GVWR. However, if it has only 5 leaves on the back and no bottom one that is about an inch think it is the light duty 2500.

I will try and snap a picture or two of the truck and I will also check the GVWR on the door and post it also.

Thanks,

I just looked at the door information tag and it says that its GVWR is 8600.

I will still try and post a picture today.

Okay, here are some pictures. If I replace my springs with the HD springs, what do I have to do with the front of my truck (to get it off the ground)?

It looks fine to me .....

Honestly I think that if you aren't used to GM trucks, this would be one thing that would take some getting used to ...

The GM trucks don't really have any worse ground clearance than a Ford or Dodge does, but they have a lot worse "approach angles" (the front hangs way too low to the ground, etc) ....

That truck looks just fine to me from what I've seen of other 2500-series trucks.

If you want to raise the front of your truck, you basically just need to crank the torsion bars on it up a little bit ...

BTW I'm from Casper too, so if you need any help on it go ahead and email me, I can show ya how ;)

Mike,

I think your truck looks normal. It has the same 8600 GVWR chassis as my 1500HD and looks like it sits the same. Unless you need the 9200 GVWR chassis, I would leave it like it is.
