I'm getting a new Magnaflow system put on my truck Saturday and was wondering what y'all thought th best system setup would be. Single out, dual out, which series... Let me know what you have and whether you like the sound/performance or can make any recomendations. Thanks a LOT! :)

I too am trying to decide on an exhaust. Some have noted that the Magnaflow system doesn’t cause such a low end performance decrease, while still maximizing your high end. That is the part I like the most. :D But after listening to some of the sound clips on their website, I was disappointed in the sound factor they produce. Granted, the sound clips are only beneficial to a point as so many different ways exist to record the sounds, and a poor recording could form an ill opinion.

My dream exhaust would give me no loss in the low end, maximize the crap out of the high end, give me a few more mpg and make my truck sound like “Eleanor” of Gone in 60 Seconds (that is one sweet Stang).

As far as the particular system, I think so much of running single or duals depends on your preference. Personally I like duals, straight out the back…always have, and guess I always will. Of course, I would consider dumping them right after they leave the muffler to help echo the sound. My question would be are you going to run an H or X pipe and then use a true dual muffler setup or just a single in and dual out muffler.

Either way, good luck as I’m sure you will enjoy whatever decision you make.

I've heard that having a single in single out will maximize the HP and torque gains, but what if there were 2 single ins single outs. Would that help it even more or not make a difference except being twice as expensive? I do like the look of dual exhaust coming out both sides of the truck, but if it robs the engine of power, then I'll take one.

Yeah I’ve heard that too. Also I heard if you run a single 3” in and then dual 2.25” out you will be okay as well. But to be honest, I have yet to try either method, so I can’t verify any accuracy.

Currently I am trying to learn more about the H and X pipes since it allows you to take duals in and duals out. It seems this would provide the ideal situation, but again my lack of experience and knowledge in this field just leaves me wondering. I have noticed the following statement on Flowmaster’s website in regards to running dual exhausts: “H-Pipe is strongly recommended in all dual exhaust applications.”

So maybe that is the key to the answer. Who knows. I sure wish an exhaust expert would shed some light on this rather popular topic. In the meantime I think I may place a call or shoot an email to the folks at Flowmaster in hopes they can answer my/our concerns.

Im going 2 magnaflow single 2.5 in 2.5 out.. dumped.. Should give me a real good performance up and high and not loose down low.. Im not really concerned about the sound.. every vehicle ive owned before this has had flowmaster on it and i wasnt impressed with the gains so i am going to try something different..

I went with Magnaflow part #14590 on my 03 GMC 6 liter HD. Dual 3" in, one 3" out, using the stock tailpipe. I too was concerned about losing low end torque, but did not with this setup. I figured with the single 3" outlet I would keep a little backpressure which is what these engines seem to like. The sound is great, throaty but not too loud. There is a slight resonance in the cab below 2000 rpm but it is not bad. At hwy speeds you can hardly hear it unless you get on it, then it wakes up. Expensive, but nice. It is also 100% stainless which I think looks great. Good luck with your choice.

Boogity3, Magnaflow does not yet have a single in, dual out under the rear bumper system available yet for your truck. I know because I have the same truck and have had this system on order for for over four months. Magnaflow may have other systems that will fit, but not that one. Hope you can find what you need.

You could always run a single dual-in/dual-out muffler which would give you the same benefit of an "x" or "H" pipe.

The benefit of having an X or H pipe is that it will balance the back pressure between the two banks of the engine. This will allow for better low-end power, and a deeper less "raspy" sound from the tailpipes.

Thanks for explaining that a little better. Am I right to assume that an H and X pipe achieves the exact same purpose? The Flowmaster rep. tried to tell me the X pipe rarely worked right on street vehicles and was more for racing applications, whereas the H pipe was more for street vehicles. I just don't see how that holds true as it all collects and evens out like you were saying.

I can see how running a single in/dual out muffler will eliminate the need for the H or X pipe. Question is....is this type of muffler just as effective as eliminating the "raspy" tones as running a true dual system with an H or X pipe?

By the way, I ran across a sound clip of a Dynomax Ultraflow (3" in, dual 2.5" out) muffler today. It is taken from a 2001 Silverado 5.3 sporting 3.5" x 24" tips. Here is a link if you want to have a listen:

I love the deep tone of this setup, but have no idea what it does for the low end. Does you Magnaflow get this deep?

So did you get it all installed today? Post back and let us know what she sounds like and which system you ended up getting. :)

The easiest way to eliminate the need for a "crossover" pipe is to go with a dual/in-dual/out muffler. Most muffler companies sell a muffler like this. This should provide the best balanced power/sound across the power band. The only options you have to decide on is where you want your dual pipes to exit, and what series muffler you want to run. You can go from quiet to loud, depending on your muffler choice.

IMHO, if you have an X or H pipe or a dual-in/dual-out muffler you are balancing out your system. This is a very important aspect that alot of people overlook...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with a dual in/dual out muffler, I will also need to add a Y pipe, right? Is there any differences in all the Y pipes currently available, or are they all pretty much the same?

I kinda like the idea of just runn'n 1 muffler, as it will keep my costs lower (assuming I don't get ape raped for the Y pipe). As far as tone goes, I'm look'n for a low and mean tone, sorta like back on the 60's musclecars. And to help get it a little louder I was considering just dumping the pipes vs. runn'n them out the sides or back. What's your thoughts on that?

Again, thanks for your help. It is much appreciated!!
