04 Yukon Denali XL Stuck Open Sunroof

Hey Guys,

I have an 04 Yukon Denali XL that i've own for a few years. I bought it from a co-worker and it had battery drainage issues which i've since resolved. When i bought it he told me  at one point the sunroof stuck open the GM dealership said the belt for the sunroof was bad and since he didn't want to spend 3k he told them to seal it shut. Shortly after I was researching the sunroofs, discovered that it didn't have a belt and if the sunroof isn't 100% closed and the battery goes dead it loses its programing. So I stuck a fuse in the box, did the programming steps and have used the sunroof for the past 3 years without issue. Today it warm enough to use it for the first time this year and it stuck open. The battery has gone dead a few times this winter due to a door that doesn't always latch and pops open after you walk away. I thought it needed to be manually closes and reprogrammed.

Anyways, I pulled the headliner down to try to manually close the sunroof. The port in the motor to do that was stripped and it even looks like the bushing itself is busted. Looking at the motor it looks like the control module is built into the front of the motor  with 5 wires going in and then it has two wires coming out the back of the module to the rear of the motor. I decided to cut those two wires going to the rear of the motor and try to bypass the module to close the roof. The motor does actuate but it only moves the sunroof 1/4" front or back. I'm not sure if the motor is binding or the sunroof itself is binding someplace.

I was reading some old threads and it looks like maybe I can get the roof closed if I pull the motor and drop the whole assembly down?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Well I finally got it closed. The rear most guides for the sunroof came out of the track and lifted up a bit binding the whole system. Once I pushed them back down and in I was able to pull the sunroof forward, bolted the assembly back up, put the motor in and jumped it to get the sunroof closed.

Does anybody know if I can put a stop block in behind the sliding assembly to keep this from happening again? I think I read that the sunroof uses timed calibration program and current sensing to know where the stop points are. I need to solder the motor leads that I snipped and jumped and then put the headliner back in. I'll drive my other car until I I think over a long term solution a bit.

Value engineering at it's finest. They could have made the tracks 1/4" longer, put limit switches in, or a stop block to keep this from happening.
