"Service Engine Soon"

Well, my 'service engine soon' light came on this morning, and i was hoping you kind folks might be able to give me some insight as to what may be causing this. I just had work done on my '97 Yukon in the last month, so it went through a diagnostics check, and either a problem slipped through or it just started up. I'm hoping that it's something minor that i may be able to fix myself (even though i'm not terribly mechanically inclined). If it's something more complex i'll just take it to a shop. I did just get rear ended this past friday, but it was at a slow speed, probably 15 MPH at the most. My bumper just got a little bent up so i just need to replace that. but, i was wondering if that may have some influence on this light coming on. Anything that you might be able to tell me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks alot for your time

Run it on down to your friendly neighborhood auto parts supply store, and they will read the code for you, and that should shed a little light on what is triggering your SES light.

If they try and charge you, go somewhere else.

Well, the SES light turned off on its own today. I was on my way home from lunch and i noticed it was off. It was on this morning on my way to work, so it must've turned off sometime around noon. Is this a normal thing, or is the light just acting up?

Depending on the code set, it can reset by itself. A Engine misfire will flash the lamp, and the next cycle (car off/on) will reset and just store the code.

A loose gas cap that was was put back on, or if you try to fuel with the engine running will shut the light off and 3 complete diag cycles of the leak test, but only after the parms are met to run the test..

In short, you need the code....

The code is still stored in the PCM, and should be there for at least 50 cycles.
