5.7 Vortec Lifter Noise?

I just bought a 98 Suburban and noticed that when the truck is cold there is a ticking/tapping noise coming from the engine that usually lasts for 5-10 minutes.

Is this normal? It's definitely not knocking or pinging so I doubt it's coming from the bottom end as it sounds to come from the valve cover area. I live in BC so it's about 2 deg Celsius when this happens.

 

I read somehere that by replacing the oil filter with one that has a bypass valve in it is supposed to fix this problem. My oil pressure appears normal around 275 kpa.

Same problem here with my 3/4 5.7 engine

 

I doubt it is the CSK that everyone is talking about i think its just the weather, age and how many miles are on it .

Make sure your running the right oil for cold temps....

Believe it or not the truck didn't have an owners manual. What oil should I be running?

5w-30 oil year round for the 350, and small block chevys have had lifter ticks for eons...

 

It may just be dirty, but usally once they start, they never stop.. seen them go for years like that.

Thanks for the info. The oil looked clean but I think I'll change it just to be sure.

Also try using AC 1218 oil filter.

It has a check valve to help keep oil up in the

engine.
