Ball Joint Replacement on 89 Pickup

Hello,

Just wondered if anybody could give me some info on replacing upper and lower ball joints. The truck is a 1989 with a 5.7 L engine and Four Wheel Drive.

I was told that the ball joints are worn and the upper and lower passenger side ball joints need replacing. Total price for installation was quoted at: $360.98, 159.98 for joints and $210 for labor.

 

It was also recommended that the idler arm be replaced: 109.98 + 77.00 for labor.

 

Is this a reasonable price for replacement? Also, what are the difficulties of doing this job personally? Obviously, I would like to save $278 in labor if possible.

 

Has anybody done this type of work and know the ins and outs of doing it yourself?

PS: I don't know my truck inside out, but to replace some of these parts and save some money I would like to take the time to learn.
