4 wheel drive turning itself off

When I put my truck in 4WD (hi or low) and lose traction at all, the truck automatically shuts off 4WD  and I get a “4WD OFF” message on the dash, then the only way to shift back into 4WD is to disconnect the battery, reconnect and then try again. Not sure if it’s a transfer case issue or what, but any help is greatly appreciated.
