98 Z71 couple of ?

Hello again! My 98 Z71 has a push button transfer case. Eventhough this is push button, this is NOT autotrac correct? Do I upgrade to the new blue fluid or do I use the auto tranny fluid as recommended in my owner's manual? There is no button on the dash that say's "autotrac". Also what type of actuator do I have? Is it the thermal type that has all the problems? Did chevy change these somewhere during this model run? Thanks buddies-Lou in Florida P.S. does this transfer case have a neutral position? Is neutral engaged by pushing the 2 high button, will the light go out, then you are in transfer case neutral?

Correct its not an autotrac. As for neutral you have to push 2 buttons at the same time, but I cant remember which ones. Your manual should tell you. Not sure when they changed to the electric actuator, but yes the thermal type is the problematic piece.

The upgrade actuators are well worth the cost. I put one in my 1990 and it's much better. The Blue fluid is synthetic and can be used in all transfer cases, autotrac or not, and I would highly recommend it, or any other synthetic ATF in any transfer case that requires ATF. I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in mine. takes 2 quarts by the way!

Remember with the AutoTrac transfer cases, you MUST use the AC Delco AutoTrak fluid. If not, you could have problems with the clutch pack inside the transfer case. The clutch pack is only used if the AUTO 4WD button is pushed.

The regular transfer case uses Dexron III (Regular or synthetic, your choice) as it has a drive chain and planetary gears.

Butch, your Denali has a single-speed permanent AWD, right? Does your transfer case run "open" or is there some sort of viscous coupling inside it?? Just curious.
