Transmission Cooler, Opinion Needed...

Alright guys, I need an opinion here.

 

My truck's details are as follows: (4.8L, 4L60E, 3.42 Open, RCSB, 6,000 miles) and I am wondering if I need to install my newly acquired GM Auxillary Transmission cooler. I ordered a "kit" from GM consisting of the cooler itself, 2 lines, and the appropriate hardware. It looks to be the exact thing the dealer would install as a D.I.O.. I can think of other things I need to spend the money on than this cooler, and am contemplating taking it back.

 

My problem is that I won't ever be doing much towing, other than an occasional 2,500lbs or so, with nothing over 5,000 ever. I plan on changing the fluid every 50K, and probably switching over to redline synthetic at that time. Should my transmission be ok in the long run without the cooler, with such light use? Thanks!

Without a transmission temperature gauge you won't know until it is too late.

 

It's not the distance or frequency of towing, a single very high overheat event can cost bigtime. I'd recommend the auxiliary cooler on anything over 2000 lbs towing.

Right on. Even if you NEVER tow, just keeping the trans cooler will help it live much longer. It's a no brainer: put it on.

I figured these would be the type responses I'd get. :cheers:

I'm paranoid as hell about this type of stuff, but alot of my gear head buddies keep telling me I don't need a cooler for the type of driving I do... I guess I was just letting them get to me.

My last truck, an 89' C1500 lasted 13 years with the 305/700r4 combo without a problem until ~149,000 miles when the transmission went bad. I installed a cooler pretty late ~100K, and it was probably too late. Of course, this poor truck was my first vehicle and had to put up with my heavy foot and mechanical experimentation of all sorts. If you bought a GM OEM style cooler you spent alot of money. I'm guessing close to $200 bucks.

 

Take it back, and buy a $50 tranny cooler from the Auto Parts store and then you'll have about $150 to spend on other things.

 

the bottom line is that any tranny cooler is better than none... (and the aftermarket cooler may actually have more cooling capacity than a factory cooler)

I was also wondering how much the factory cooler costs?? I know aftermarket ones are pretty cheap and do a good job, but I just hate mounting it, I dont like the zip tie through the radiator install and I usually have to end up fabricating a mount myself. Would just be alot easier to have one that fits a Silverado already, but I guess the Zip tie deal works!

I had the dealer install one on my '00 1500. It was a nice unit with all pre-formed steel lines. The dealer said the box was something like 6 feet long!!!

 

I don't remember what I paid for it, but I'm pretty sure it was over $300 installed!!!

was thinking of this myself, has there been many tranny problems on the newer silverado's? i aint gonna dish out 300 for a factory job though, thats the price somebody mentioned up there, anybody got a good aftermarked fit they wanna share?

If you order the truck with the Towing Package, it has the external cooler from the factory. I wouldn't pay $300 to a GM dealer.

 

My 1984 Ford F-150 special order came with a C6, but "Super Cooling" didn't include an external cooler. Another "better idea" from Ford. Big rip off.

 

I got a B&M motorhome external cooler, rated 29,000 GVW and self-regulating. Took me about 3 hours to put it in, including taking the grill apart.

 

My cooler is plumbed so the ATF first goes through the rad cooler, then the B&M external cooler, then back to the trans.

I ordered the "kit" from GM, including the cooler, the bolts to mount it to the stock location in front of the radiator, two plastic tabs to secure the bottom of it, and two lines that attach like the current lines running to the radiator from the transmission. I'll post a pic tonight if I can remember to get my camera out of the truck.

 

A friend of mine works at a the GMC dealership where I got it. I paid $91 total w/tax, with the parts mentioned above, plus 2 quarts of transmission fluid in case I need it.

 

I was going to go with Hayes, like a I had on my previous truck, but since this one was only a little more, I went with it. I'll try and get those pics and part numbers tonight when I get off work.

That's how this one is set up as well... B&M makes some Good stuff!

 

I'm just wondering if the connections where the lines meet the radiator are going to require some weird tool or something. I've only had a chance to glance in there since it's been raining, and I know they are some sort of quick connect deal. Hmmm... d**n weather needs to hurry up and clear.. :thumbs:

I think there is a special tool you need to release the connector. Sort of like the +2003 fuel filters.

 

I think the factory external cooler on mine goes through the radiator cooler first, then the external cooler.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.    
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated.
