My horn died!

Today on my way to school, I go to honk at a dog crossing the road. It makes noise, but not the right one? Then I have nothing..... Where should I go to get a new one besides the dealer? Thanks!

You can buy any horn at an autoparts store and put it in. I took out the horn on my silverado and mounted a louder horn in it's place. If memory serves correctly, the horn is on the front driver's side below the battery. I can't remember just how I got to it.

But, there is a harness if you get a new horn from the dealer to just plug it in. If you wanna swap in an aftermarket horn you just have to cut and crimp two wires.

I've got an 03 GMC 3500 4x4 CC D/max/Allison and I've got an 04 ordered, gotta have that new D/MAX.

What kind of new horn did you put on your Avalanche? That sound like a neat idea, would like to put one on my 04 when it gets here hopefully sometime in March.

Thanks AL.

Well the same thing happened on my dad's 00 Z and I know that the fuse is working....it did work but then slowly faded or died so I know its just the horn....I just gotta get it replaced.

Welcome to the forum

Actually the horn went in my Silverado. I couldn't tell you the brand name off hand. It was from Checker Auto Parts. They had a few horns there and I just picked one up for about 10 or 15 bucks. I'd like to find an awoooooga (my best interpertation of the sound) for the avalanche. I've always thought those old horns sound cool and definetly get more attention than a simple beep.

But, you should be able to pick up any kind of horn at an auto parts store. You could also mount an air horn between the radiator and the grille if you want to make it really loud. I just stuck w/ a basic electric horn considering I very rarely honk at anyone.

The stock horns go bad because they easily get water in them. So, if you are mounting a new horn consider putting it up higher to get it out of the reach of water when you hit a puddle.
