Westers

I am considering getting the much-discussed Westers chip, but have a few questions that I would rather direct to users than Westers itself.

What exactly does it do to increase performance?

Does it affect the shifting points? Mixtures? Does it simply rev higher?

Does it give both better fuel economy and performance at the same time (possible, but sounds unbelievable)?

Does it cause the engine to wear harder by working it harder?

I can perform minor repairs, but am completely devoid of any skill in auto-electronics - do I need help to install it?

Any insight is appreciated!

Alan, Here's the whole Wester's story!

Allot of guys aren't aware of what is available in the custom programs. I looked into a few of them till I hit on the Wester's about 6 months ago. He wasn't that well known then but I wasn't satisfied with the Hypertech and Superchips programmers I already had so I gave him a call. He is so knowledgeable and accommodating that I ordered one for my truck, couldn't go wrong with a 30 day return policy! 5 days later I got it UPS. Took all of 10 min to swap it and remove the stock PCM, it is located between the battery and radiator under the hood. Wow, I was impressed. Instant BIG difference in throttle response and power. The "dead spot" under 3000rpm was much better, the torque management was gone and the shifts were crisp with no overlap. My truck felt like I put a big block in it! And I'm getting better gas mileage running 87 octane with no pinging! I have since updated to a 93 octane tune and again got a big performance boost. Stock I ran a 16.1 in the quarter. With the 87 octane tune I ran a 15.6, and with the 93 tune I ran a 15.3, all with no other changes and with similar weather conditions. My gas mileage increased 1-2 mpg around town and 2-3 mpg on the highway, hard to believe but true!

When you order a custom programmed PCM from Wester's, it is programmed for your VIN#. The dealer cannot tell it is not the PCM that came with your truck, nor can they see that any custom programming has been done. It looks all stock to them. Before Wester's loads his custom programming, he flashes all the latest GM updates into it for your VIN#, so the dealer will see it is completely up to date and not have to reflash anything. If by chance GM had an update in the future and the dealer reflashed the computer, just call Lyndon Wester and he will send another custom programmed PCM to you, no charge for life, (only a shipping and handling charge) when you get it and install it, send the old one back to him. Also, if you ever make any changes to your truck in the future, like even larger tires, different gears, supercharger or whatever, call him and he will send another custom programmed PCM to you, again NO CHARGE FOR LIFE! If you sell your truck in the future and buy another, Wester's will credit your full purchase price toward the purchase of the new PCM for the new truck, FOR LIFE!!! And you're never without the use of the truck because you don't send him your core until you get the new one and install it!!!

For Wester's, if you have questions, Lyndon can be contacted at 1-888-WESTER1 or via e-mail at:

[email protected] or [email protected]

Can also visit http://westers_garage.eidnet.org/ for additional information.

Tell him Butch sent you!

Butch 02 Denali covered it pretty well...

I know it's alot of money, and I was nervous about spending it, but the 30 day money back gaurantee eased my mind. Also after talking to Lyndon on the phone, I was easily convinced that he was a very competent and knowledgable person. He promised me that I wouldn't be dissapointed with the new PCM, and as you can see, I'm still running it and smiling everytime I put my foot on the gas!!! The difference is as noticable under light throttle as it is under heavy throttle.

I would like to ask a follow up question on the Westers. I am researching for a new truck and really like the 2500 HD or possibly the 2500 CC SB 4X4.

My question, running the Westers PCM 87 octane tuner Butch stated he was getting 1-2 mpg better around town and 2-3 better on the Highway. So now, Butch, you are getting 14 around town and 16 on the Highway? For those of you that run them are you getting similar improvements? What are you mpg figures?

Yes that's pretty close to what I get. 13.5-14 around town and 15.5 to 16.5 on the highway. I have a 325HP 6.0 with 4:10's, AWD and Quadrasteer in my Sierra Denali. I drive hard, and my in town driving is on back streets with lots of stop and go traffic and lights. Also this is hilly country around here. My highway driving is also usually in traffic and up and down hills and mountains. I bet on flat ground with less traffic I would see even better mileage.

That is what I average as well with my 6.0L, but I don't have the full 93 octane tune yet. I noticed about 1-2 miles per gallon increase. I think anything over 10mpg with these HD trucks and a gas V8 is good mileage. Gas mileage was never really a factor in my purchase since I new that I was buying a HD truck not a compact car. Would not trade my truck for any car and I commute 30miles one way to work every day. :)

Ah, to get those kind of numbers. That would be great. No matter what I do, or how Lyndon tunes mine, I get the same mileage I did stock (about 12 average). Hey Butch, maybe I can borrow your truck sometime. :)

I'm figuring I am getting .5-1 MPG better than before. However this is intown milage and the truck rarely warms up. I have seen 16.5 MPG's on the highway though which is much better than I expected with this big truck!!!

My 1990 3500 with a 454 and a 9' Fisher plow gets 4 MPG when I'm plowing :chevy:

That's BAD gas mileage!!!

Jim, I know you want to run 87 for the savings, but try a tank of 93. You may find you get much better gas mileage, enough to offset the cost at least. 2 MPG should more than cover the increased cost. Worth a try, even if it's a break even you will have more power. Maybe even get a chirp out of those big meats!

I haven't ordered my PCM from Westers yet but, will be doing that shortly. I seem to be getting the same mpg's that you guys with the Wester's PCM. I plan on going strait for the 93 octane version. I have talked with Lyndon and can't wait to order mine. :)

I have the 87 tune though. If I dump premium in the tank I doubt the computer will know what to make of it. The tables won't have the necessary range to accommodate it.

And actually, I have thought about it from time to time. If I was certain it would help I might opt for the 89 tune. That way, I could still use (relatively) cheap gas AND get a performance boost. Perhaps not as much as the 93 tune, but something anyway. So long as it doesn't impact towing of course.
