Homegrown sweet corn

We're about a week off of our sweet corn being ready to eat, can't wait.  Had to put up the electric fence around it yesterday as it is so close.  If the coons find it before the fence goes up, you may as well not bother going out there as they eat it all.

These eight rows go on forever it seems, don't ask me why dad planted them in such a long stretch, guess it was because I was down at school. :idontgetit:

You people who haven't had the opportunity to eat grown such as this don't know what you are missing.  The best stuff we've bought at the store is still just awful compared to this.

I'll take mine grilled, covered in butter with a pinch of salt thanks.

Nothing beats homegrown corn-on-the-cob, or greenbeans, or potatoes...

Dang, in about a week we are going to start harvesting corn here.  Down in south Texas they are already harvesting.

I kinda wish we woulda planted some late sweet corn.  Sure do miss it.

Corn on the cob is our favorite weekend food.  I soak it for 2-3 hours in the husk in a tall Tupperware tub that holds all the ears underwater.  Then it goes on the grill, still in the husk, for about 20 minutes, turning occasionally until the husk starts to char.  I use a big grill mitt to hold the hot ears as I peel off the husks and silk.  Yum!

I had some Michigan sweet corn a few years ago. There is nothing like it.

People down South grow what we call sweet corn, but it is NOTHING compared to what the Midwest has.

Mmm...yep, homegrown sweet corn is the best.  Makes me wanna hop in the truck and drive to the family farms in Nebraska to eat some.  It is definately the best tasting type of corn.  We always bring some back with us whenever we have time to trek back there.

Finally ate our first last night.  Even Gus enjoys it.  He heads out to the patch in the garden, picks himself an ear, strips the husk off, and eats it.

MMMMM sweet corn just a few weeks away here on our place we got 100 acres of that stuff . Its a lot better than the regular 800 acres of field corn that just gets sent off for stuff like tortillas , feed and other things .

Gonna pick me some before the Del Monte crew has a chance to get their picker out there. mmmmm

You should have plenty of time.  A neighbor here grew 100 acres of it for some company a couple years back.  I was just shocked at how OLD it was when they finally came in and picked it.  I mean I would have passed on picking for myself about three weeks before they got there, but apparently thats the age they want so it goes through their machines better.

Keep that in mind those of you who buy your corn in the stores, it aint' exactly fresh, even when it was picked.
