AC Compressor or What?

While back I had trouble with my AC. I took it down to Norman Frede Chevy and they were extremely helpful. Turns out it was a regulator swtich that was preventing my AC from kicking on. Afterwards AC blew hard for the next few days and then nothing again. I took my truck back to get em to look at their switch and they tell me my compressor has a leak in it. This is frustrating for me because my stepfather had the compressor replaced a few years ago. Dealer wants $600 to change out. My question..Is it possible that my AC just needs to be charged, but dealer was trying to give me the shaft?

Just buy a can of that stuff with leak stopper in it! Not sure if that works for a leak inside the compressor though!
