Does anyone know how to disengage the grade breaking on the 2024 2500/3500 HD's?  On my 2019 LD LT I had to hold the Tow/Haul button on the gear shift for 3 seconds.  It would reset each time I restarted the engine (or held the button for 3 seconds again).

I've tried holding in the Tow/Haul button on my new 3500 for 3 seconds (inside bottom half of the Mode switch), but that just turns the tow/haul mode on/off.

Also, there's no message on my instrument cluster when the grade braking is activated (I think the owners manual says there should be).

Anyone have information about this?

Thanks!

Column shift or center console electronic shifter?

Normal powertrain grade braking only works typically on downhill roads.  I've never had it actuate on flat ground that I can recall.  I know on the older trucks so 15-19 it would pop a message on the DIC "grade braking enabled" or something like that.

The HD trucks naturally have a normal amount of driveline braking that can't be turned off as its due to the transmission design/engine operation.  This was evident since the 6 speeds arrived on the scene as they are (and everything forward of the 6 speeds) a clutch to clutch transmission like the old Allison 1000, so there is driveline braking that can't be avoided.

How it worked on the old trucks:

  • Normal mode powertrain grade braking defaults to "ON" after each ignition key cycle.
  • To disable or enable all grade braking within the current ignition key cycle, press and hold the Tow/Haul button for three seconds.
  • No grade braking is available in Range Selection Mode (Manual Shift Mode).
  • For grade braking to activate it requires the driver to apply steady brake pedal pressure to maintain desired speed while driving on a downhill grade. The vehicle's modules monitor the amount of brake pedal apply, vehicle deceleration rates, and other factors to determine if normal mode powertrain grade braking is necessary. When the feature activates for the first time that ignition cycle, the DIC will display "Grade Braking On" or "Grade Braking Active" and you will notice the transmission down shifts and engine RPM increases. At this point, if the brake pedal is released the transmission will hold the current gear. If additional engine/transmission braking is needed to help maintain desired speed, reapply steady brake pedal pressure and additional down shifts may occur.
  • Normal mode powertrain grade braking will have a less aggressive transmission down shift schedule than Tow/Haul mode powertrain grade braking.
  • Grade-braking can be exited by depressing the accelerator pedal.

Just went and played with a couple during lunch, a 2020-2023HD and a 2024 HD.  Assuming the "normal powertrain grade braking" is still present in these 2020+up HD trucks (and 19-current 1500s), it can no longer be defeated using the tow/haul button method.

Grade braking seems to be off when descending in range select mode (“L”) in my 2021 3500 HD gas.

You are right, manual mode will I forgot about that method as it worked in the prior generation as well.
