I too have been shopping for a new rig. The srw 3500, optioned the same as the HD is only about $100.00 more. My understanding is the tires (265)make up most of the the extra GVW. I bought an HD because the SRW has painted steel wheels. The HD has the chrome. I will change to 265 tires when the stock 245 wear out. Plus in my state (NY) registration and insurance is based on GVW so the HD is cheaper.

I have had my 04 2500HD DA since the end of Nov. I am very happy with it. It is really a 3500SRW with an HD badge. I pull a 6500Lb Travel trailer, a wife 3 kids and a lot of crap and this thing does it no sweat. My 1500 got about 8-9 mpg struggling (I travel through Ca mountains). With the 2500HD DA it gets an easy 12 - 13 towing. The 2500HD does have the 9200Lb GVWR. Worth the money for me. If you get one, you won't be disappointed.
