Screaching Tires

Over the weekend, i was in an empty parking lot at about 11:30 pm with a friend screwing around, screaching tires and what-not.  OUT OF NOWHERE comes a damn cop, sirens, the works.  Gets out of his stupid ford with a big damn maglight that looked like a knight-stick and is blinding me.  Tells me that screaching tires is wreckless driving (IN AN EMPTY PARKING LOT WITH NOONE AROUND) and if he sees me doing it again he is going to  put me in JAIL.  NO TICKETS, NO NOTHING.  JUST JAIL!  WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP?!  Anywhoo.  just wanted to vent frustration.

I dont know about going straight to jail, but several friends of mine have gotten tickets for peelin out and bein a 'wreckless driver' by doin so.  Life sucks sometimes, just gotta deal with it because there aint nuthin you can do to change it.

Oh yeah, that's something else I don't have to worry about with my now locking diff. Yeah that cop was probably lying to scare you, JAil for screeching tires? little over the edge

you know realllllly cheap tires will make noise even with an old lady driving. but if you were going crazy in a parking lot trying to do burnouts or 180s/360s then he probably wanted to do something to get you to stop. be gald you didn't get a ticket. think of it as a reason to find a better place to go have some fun.

Here the officer cannot enforce traffic laws on private property . So If I wanted to smoke the tires in our driveway right next to the road there is nothing that the officer can do about it.

Did you happen to mention to him that a parking lot is private property and that for all he knows you have the owners permisson. The only way he could have given you ticket is if the owners of the lot complained. Then with a formal complaint you could have gotten a destruction of private property summans for defacing their lot with your rubber. Its not likely the owners would have let this go all the way to court even if they did file the complaint.

Just for the sake of completeness only, there are noise and nuisance ordinances in some towns/cities/townships that supercede the "right to do what I want on private property".  Nothing implied here, guys.  

 

I like laying a patch once in a while too!!  

 

Oh, BTW, the cop was just trying to scare you a little, and generally speaking, the owner of the property needs to complain before they can take legal action, ie - arresting someone.

Even if a nuisance law is in effect here I still don't think that such act can be considered a nuisance until someone complains. I could be wrong it has happened once before

 

I'm just guessing that 2k2TahoeSS is maybe a little "younger" and it really burns my @ss that some guy with a badge and an attitude threatens him with JAIL TIME for squeeling tires because he assumes that 2k2 doesn't know any better.

 

I'm also willing to bet that if Officer Hardnose had pulled up and simply said something like "Hey guy lets knock it off O.K., It's late and the people that live around here probably don't want to listen to it". 2k2 wouldn't have even brought this up.

hogger, I agree 100% that the cop could and should have handled it differently - DEFINITELY!  

 

In this day and age, the law doesn't need to needlessly alienate anyone, especially over something as insignificant as laying a patch.

Around here it'd be an excessive display of power tower ticket which would then go up to reckless say if someone were standing in the middle of the lot as you were re-paving it.

I always thought that they couldnt do anything because it was private property also! Actually if you were the owner it would have been cool to tell him to get off your parking lot!!!!!!!

When I was a teen, the cops in Dublin, GA called it "Laying Drag". I don't remember what the official legal name for the offense was, but we sure got a lot of tickets for it. I never actually got one myself, because I didn't own anything that had enough oomph to actually lay drag.

But, a lot of my friends got nabbed, and it didn't matter where you were, alone or in traffic, parking lot, street, or whatever. If you are in an area where a cop can hear you burn out, chances are you're not out in the country. The police get flak from home and business owners when people are laying rubber and making noise, especially late at night.

Go out on a lonely country road by yourself and I'm willing to bet that you can shred your tires without any interruptions.
