Hello I hope this question hasn't been asked as scrolled around and couldn't find anything on this but what I have is a 09 Chevy Silverado Ltz 1500 4wd with 5.3l and I am adding under glow rock lights and these work in junction with turn signals and brake lights i have the turn signal lights working with the rock lights but not 100% sure where i can connect the one wire i have for the rock lights to the brake light so the rock lights work with brake lights? I think the brake wire is light blue but not exactly sure where it is? I am sorry if this was confusing. Please any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Either the green wire (right) or yellow wire (left) run the brake lights in the rear  - just tap into whichever one is closest.

 

Or light blue for the 3rd brake light (CHMSL).

 

EDIT - sounds like the signals have a separate circuit from the stop lamps on those aftermarket lights, so your only choice would be to tap into the 3rd brake light.

Ok that won't be a problem but do you know where I could splice in by any chance? Preferably under the hood somewhere would be ideal but if not its no biggie?i have a wire ran to the back already but i cant find a light blue wire in the cluster under the bed in the back i do see a royal blue wire though. Ok i havent tried the yellow wire yet. I can't remember offhand, but there should be brake light power in either the under hood or interior fuse blocks.

And just to confirm that's going to be a light blue wire? Would running straight to the brake switch you think that would work?

I don't know if it's blue up there. You would need to check and make sure power is downstream of the switch, otherwise you will have just a constant 12V there. If it isn't blue, it's probably a good bet that it is NOT switched there. I'm thinking I should tell you to disregard looking up there since that is probably the case. I just can't remember - been a long time since I've done electrical troubleshooting on a 900-series truck.

 

You might have to fish a wire down from the 3rd brake light down through the sheetmetal of the cab - that would be the best way of doing it. Having a snake of some sort would be mandatory, whether an actual wire snake, or something made out of metal coat hangers.

I can't tell you with 100% certainty, but I'm FAIRLY certain it will be blue there. Best thing to do is get a test light, then get a helper to hit the brakes while testing.

 

On that note, IF I remember right, on the 900 series trucks the brake switch was KEYED. In other words, the ignition would have to be ON (engine doesn't have to be running) in order for the brake lights to work, so don't let that take you down a rabbit hole. Most vehicles aren't wired that way - every other vehicle I've ever seen the brake switch went straight to battery power, whether the ignition was on, or not.

If you do not have a factory trailer brake controller, there is a CMHSL wire taped up under the dash. I believe the wire is orange on these trucks and it should be marked.It is in the aftermarket trailer brake controller bundle. Look it up in gmupfitter.com.

 

It is up by the steering column.

Ahh, yep - forgot about that. Tucked between the column and parking brake, taped up very heavily.

I did confirm orange wire with test light prior to install and that was the CMHSL.

    • The curb weight on a 1 ton crew cab long bed is around 7k lbs.  Now, I don't know where you went to school but 9k is not more than 2x 7k lbs. More than 2x 7k lbs would be 14k+.   With that said, obviously yes you're going to feel a 9k lb trailer when slowing down.  I already said, when accelerating.  When changing lanes?  No.  But if you look at the context of what was quoted, the original person said, "after a mile or two..." which means that would be after the accelerating portion and you're driving a generally steady pace.  Please do learn to read and comprehend.
    • So I purchased the Range unit for my 2026 and I am seeing different locations suggested for the ECM . Can anyone confirm wither under hood, left side or right side or behind the wheelwell?
    • Like I've said before. Di and Carbon buildup is not that big of a concern. Engine had minimal buildup, and that engine was obviously not super well maintained. Do regular oil changes, and you're gtg as long as the rest of the truck lasts. Also, the High Pressure FP that people ****** about, but can't tell you why.  Now, I wish they'd trash the variable oil pump. No real world issues with them, but I'll gladly eat whatever miniscule MPG it's saving me in favor of more oil at all RPMs.    Curious to see his assessment of the 7.3 compared to the 6.6. I expect he'll praise the port inj, but from a structural standpoint, the 6.6 is as robust as any engine out there.    Not to take away from the 7.3. I feel it's equally as good as the 6.6.     As to heat on the rear cyls, I'd have to see numerous examples before I'd say it's an issue. Especially not knowing the history of that engine. For all is known, they could have blown a rad hose, and ran it hot, and the 2 rear cyls may be the first to get hot in a low coolant situation, but not be an issue aside from that. 
    • "Life is getting back to normal."    I'm driving again and all new joints are operating as expected for this stage of recovery.   My most recent joint replacement still requires a lot of attention but experience has taught me that time will quiet the remaining pain.  I joked with my surgeon that another joint replacement would take my mind off my most recent surgery and he responded by saying the next will be a hip!  There are no plans for another surgery but, unlike me, I don't think he was joking!  I certainly wouldn't refuse further replacement  if required but hope to spend time out of the "post-op"  period.  I can't stress enough that if you have been recommended for total hip, knee or shoulder replacement that you welcome the offer.  Post-op "recovery" may sound daunting and painful, however, this is far better than the insidious erosion of mobility you are currently experiencing.  Imagine what it would feel like to wake up most mornings feeling better and more mobile than you did the previous day!  Prior to my first surgery in June 2025, even getting out of bed was becoming a formidable task.  Since the day after my first surgery, I get out of bed everyday easily and unassisted.  Making the switch to feeling a little better each day rather than a little worse, is hugely motivating!
