New Chevy2500LD CC

Hello all, new member and wanted to say hello. I traded my 01 1500 ext cab Sierra this weekend and got a new 04 Silverado 2500LD CC. I am pumped.

Question on the 500 mile break in period. Should this be taken seriously? I am planning on driving this baby from SoCal to AZ tomorrow and certainly won't be keeping it under 55mph. I have heard people say it is important and others say drive it like you stole it. Would love to hear opinions.

Thanks

Welcome to the board and congrats on the new truck! My understanding now is that for the break in period, the only thing you should do is vary your speed. Going over 55 is no big deal, but setting it on cruise at 70 for 4 hours straight is bad!! Vary your speed, 75, 65, 70, 60, etc. this way the motor/drivetrain gets a feel for all different speeds. Also, don't be too hard on the brakes yet, and I have also heard to not tow anything. Look in your manual - it probably says something close to what I have just said.

I varied my speed but after a few hundred miles I cruised at 60-70 My parents 03 honda had no break in. The best thing is to find some hilly terrain put 200 miles on those conditions should help as your speed is up but your working the engine pretty good.

I bought mine in Anchorage and made the 160 mile drive to Kenai which is through mountains and speed limits range from 35 through Sterling to 65 in the pass. All I did was keep it under 60 and varied the speed limit with NO CRUISE CONTROL. That was per Tony Chevrolet's head mechanic and the truck seems to be doing very well.

Your going to love this truck!!

Hey cg6149, that's cool, I just traded in my 02 Trailblazer in for a 04 1500 Z-71 crew cab yesterday. I couldn't find anything in the manual about break-in so I just did what Harley Davidson said to do. (sort of) Just don't drive the same speed for a while. I drove from Michigan to Louisville Ky. today. I put on over 100 miles on it before I left and made sure I varied my speed all the way here. Went between 65 and 85 and didn't hold it at any speed very long. Dealers in Detroit say you don't have to do anything but should not be hard on the brakes right off the bat. I say it don't hurt a thing to baby it a little for a while.

I just love the ride and looks of mine and am glad I bought it!

Keep safe...........Frank

Wel, about the only thing you're not supposed to do is heavy towing during the first 600 miles. The last thing you want to do is baby it, drive it like a little granny. Want to know the GMPP (General Motors Performance Parts) recommended break-in for their crate motors (Including Vortec truck motors)?

1. Run motor at 2,500 RPM for 30 minutes.

2. Change oil and filter using 10W-30, no synthetics

3. Drive at varying speeds and loads for 30 miles, no WOT

4. Run 5-6 medium throttle runs to 5000 RPM, backing off to 20 MPH

after each run

5. Run 2 WOT runs to 5000 RPM, backing off to 20 MPH after each run

6. Change oil and filter using 10W-40, no synthetics

7. Drive next 500 miles normally, without WOT, towing, hard use

8. Change oil and filter using 10W-40, you may now use synthetics

I special-ordered my 2000 GMC Sierra and followed most of the GMPP recomendations. I changed my oil and filter at 100 miles, again at 600 miles, and switched to Mobil 1 at 1,200 miles.

At 600 miles, I also changed the front gear oil, rear gear oil, ATF, and transfer oils. I did find fuzz on the 4L60E pan magnet and the rear axle cover magnet. I then started heavy towing.

At 1,200 miles, I serviced all the gear oils, ATF, and transfer case again. After inspecting the magnets on the pans, found a few specs. I checked the pan magnets again in 2002 and everything was spotless.

Hope this helps.

    • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery.
    • The lifter issue can be dealt with by shorter oil changes and quality oil IMO.
    • Got heavy rain, hail and light rain yesterday.
    • I'm putting in an A-pillar pod/gauges, and I'm asking if anybody can identify a (preferably) fuse for a switched power and illumination circuit on the driver's side interior fuse panel. Offhand, everything I checked with a test light was constant-hot, and I'd much rather uses a piggyback fuse. I can certainly find a wire, but I'd rather not half-tap.   Thanks in advance for any help.
