I have a 2024 GMC Sierra Elevation with the 5.3L but I got an email offering a good deal on a 2025 Sierra so I called and they have two 25 Sierra AT4's but both have the 3.0L diesel. I thought at first I wanted to go diesel but now I'm having second thoughts. I travel camp the entire summers and thought the 3.0 would be better for towing but after talking to a couple who a 3.0 I'm not sure I'd be better off with the 3.0 as opposed to the 5.3. Anyone have any real live experience towing withe 3.0 DuraMax? If you had it to do again would or would you choose a different engine?  Thanks

i will probably get stomped on for this but GM doesn't really have reliable power train. 5.3 and 6.2 MAY have lifter problems. 6.2 apperent bearing issues, 10 speed transmissions with valve body problems. the 3.0 diesel MAY have dpf issues. it doesn't matter which transmission you have you MAY have a bad torque converter. the power train that seems to have the least of problems is the 2.7 turbo with the 8 speed. my 2014 5.3 is at 250k miles without a major problem and my 2020 2.7 is almost at 100k miles with no major problems. this why i capitalized the word MAY because not every power train will have problems as seen by the 2 trucks i own. myself personally i would keep what you have but the 3.0 diesel is really nice to drive

I have the 2023 3.0 baby diesel and haven't had any issues though I've only towed 10,000 Gross. My 2019 Sierra with the 5.3 and 8 speed pulled ok, but mileage and torque sucked. Plus the transmission was crap. I went with the diesel to try something new. I'm satisfied with it. Now if the price of diesel would come down. My neighbor has a 2024 Sierra 1500 with the 5.3 and swears by it. He tows a landscape trailer everyday with two zero turn commercial mowers two push mowers plush other equipment. He does say the gas mileage isn't great but has had no issues. Another friend has a 2023 2500 with the 6.2. He runs a transport business hauling small loads on a twin axle heavy trailer. He has had some engine problems but nothing serious. He is considering going to a 2500 diesel for better mileage and higher torque. Depending on frequency, weight and terrain, I wouldn't have any problem with the baby diesel and max tow kit. Keep in mind, the max payload is 2400lbs. Gross is around 13,000.

I love the 3.0 diesel in my 2024 Sierra SLT (Regular Box and Max Tow).  I don't tow a lot but it does a great job when I do tow.  The best part of owning the diesel is the 28-30 mpg we get running back and forth the 55 miles to our farm.  Diesel in our area ranges from $2.99-$3.39 a gallon depending on location (in town much cheaper than along the highway), regular gas is $2.69 and premium is $3.39 at Costco, so we do well with the diesel.  All that said, I'm not sure the depreciation hit on trading a 2024 for a 2025 would be worth the change, unless you really wanted the diesel and really wanted to upgrade from Elevation to AT4.
