c5vetteman Posted March 18, 2004 Posted March 18, 2004 GM Recalls More Than 4 Million Pickups 24 minutes ago NEW YORK (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM - news) said on Thursday that it would recall more than 4 million pickup trucks to replace tailgate support cables that may corrode and fracture. GM said its recall covers Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras from the 2000 to 2004 model years. The company said about 3.7 million of the vehicles are in the United States, 325,000 are in Canada, and 93,000 are in Mexico.
bigjeepinyj Posted March 18, 2004 Posted March 18, 2004 SCHOCKER!! I just hope they replace them with the same junk that is on them now! I know I was happy when the tailgate on my 26,000 pickup went crashing down for a nice dent with 250 pounds on it. It was a great feeling. Rant Off.....
1BADHD Posted March 18, 2004 Posted March 18, 2004 Wonder if they will fix the d**n crease in my tailgate!!
c5hd Posted March 18, 2004 Posted March 18, 2004 What is the normal procedure for this? They just swap them out the next time I go in for service?
Roofer Posted March 19, 2004 Posted March 19, 2004 The News said the new ones are stainless steel. Whether they are a cable or not, I don't know. BTW, I have had them break on two different trucks. My '98 Z71 and my '00 Z71. Both were while loading my ATV.
revrnd Posted March 19, 2004 Posted March 19, 2004 If you're handy @ metal fabrication here are the hinges I made after 1 broke last year on my 2000 GMC K2500. GMT800 Tailgate Hinges
JimWilson Posted March 22, 2004 Posted March 22, 2004 I may go get a set from the dealer, just because I think GM owes me for the hassle this BS has caused. But I went with VR Straps instead.
Chevyfreek Posted March 22, 2004 Posted March 22, 2004 Yep I went with the VR Straps as well. I had one partially broken cable so I decided not to take the chance of them breaking completely when I was loading something. The VR Straps worked out great.
