Finally finished my home theater system

I finally finished putting together my Home Theater System tonight.

I've got a 50" Toshiba TV (the one with the extra projector).

I've added a Pioneer 5.1 (500 watt) reciever with adjustable crossovers and speaker volume controls.

I have a pair of Bose 701's as my front channel speakers

A Bose VCS-10 Center Channel (on top of my TV)

And I just mounted a pair of Bose 161's on the rear walls of my living room.

All I can say is this is a great set-up!!! Probably not the cheapest way to go from scratch, but since I already had the 701's I figured I'd make it a Bose System!!! Man does it sound sweet!!! I think I have about $600 in the center, rears and the reciever.

I've not heard of the 701's (Canada)but doesn't mean much. I've heard the 901's excellent speaker.

I have a 47" Panny W/S

Yamaha Amp 260W-(with the wife and kids, I'd never use any more power, this shakes)

Energy 4.1E floors

Energy S10.2 powered sub

Sound Dynamics bookshelf 100w (also made by Energy)

A separte power/volume control for the little speakers when the tunes get cranked.

Surround is good but I wanted to go with what will work for both tunes and movies.

I have kind of big room to fill and what I do to get a somewhat surround sound I have the little speakers L on R and R on L, works well, mind you I don't get that bullet/broken glass sound through my head just around it..................lol

We have our's in the basement which is fine since it is darker and I can crank it up a bit more. Our's consists of a Mits. 65" RPTV (the cabinet come apart so that was a big selling feature along with the picture quality). An Onkyo 7.1 100w/ch receiver) 2 Klipsch RF3-2's for the fronts, a Klipsch RC3-2 for the center, and 4 Klipsch RS3-2's for the side and rear surrounds, plus a Klipsch 800w KSW 15" sub.

We are down there most nights watching TV or movies along with all the dogs. One feature you wont see in most home theaters is 5 dog beds spread out across the floor.

I think Bose discontinued the 701's a year or so ago... They are a tower type direct/reflecting speaker. Each tower contains about 1/2 dozen speakers and it has dual ports (frt/rr).

The VCS-10 center channel has 4 speakers in it, and the 161's each have 2 speakers.

All together it makes a nice set-up that fills every corner of the room (15'x25') with sound.

When I went to buy my sub, I heard the 901's and the the rest of the Bose setup they had at another retailer..........there was no dust on the brain cells after that.......lol

I ended up buying the Sub, which was my intention anyway, ended up being a health issue (wife)

Our room is 28' x 19'. got the boob tube, got the tunes, the PC's now to enhance the bar.

That was another health issue. Jeeze..... they change when they have kids.

Anyway very nice setup Shaners.

Don't want to burst your bubble, but since I used to be in the business, hell...I was a Bose certified sales associate...but those .01 series speakers weren't the best for home theater applications. I know the 901 was mentioned, which would be the worst choice. All those Bose floorstanders rely on reflected sound. Ever seen a 901 speaker? There's more speakers pointing backwards than there are foward.

The 701 is a great speaker. Very bass heavy. Personally, for standing next to a big projection tv, I liked the old 501s best. But if you have a lot of music going on, the 701 is the way to go. 901 requires way too much commitment as to the arrangement of the speakers for good sound.

bigdogs...we have very similar systems.

I went and listened to a few different speaker setups and liked the Klipsch the best. I can make the walls and floor shake so that is enough for me.

yeah baby, home theater talk..

50" Toshie (good choice, shaners).

Pio 5.1 (VSX711 off ebay, factory refurb for $130 shipped).

Paradigm titans, cc270, atoms and ps1000 sub.

JVC prog scan DVD/CD player.

Now get a calibration disk for that toshie like sound and vision home theater tune-up. And get'er outta torch mode (100% contrast) as quickly as possible.

Have fun!!!

Gotta love them horns.

I have:

Mitsubishi WS-65905 rpTV

Mitsubishi SR-HD500 HD/DirecTV

Sony DVP-CX985V 400 disc DVD

Sony SLV-R1000 S-VHS

Denon AVR3300

Klipsch KLF 12 mains

Klipsch KLF C7 center

Klipsch KLF 10 rears

Klipsch KSW 15 sub

MonsterPower HTS3500

of course Monster cable on everything

and about 450 dvds

I used to work at good guys. I got this stuff at cost. I'm glad I did. You'd kill yourselves if you knew how much markup some of this stuff has.

I know there is a HUGE markup on the cable for sure :loser:

I do like the Klipsch stuff as it has a really good SPL as well. I almost went with a Denon but got a real good deal on this Onkyo instead. Also got both the TV and speakers on sale so was like half of list price (and I'm sure they still made a nice chunk of change on it).

I have a Panasonic RP82 DVD player hooked up to my RPTV as well as a JVC SVHS player (used rarely nowadays) and even the Xbox. We also have like 400 DVDs as well. You can view my collection at

Speakers tend to have 50-60% markup. It obscene. What's more obscene is Monster Cable. If you're really, really connected, you can get it for Monster Cable employee cost which is about 75% off retail pricing. Video stuff is more like 20-30% markup.

You think you're bad, eh? Well, I have a:

Yorx 4 in 1 receiver w/ dual cassette (35wX4)

2 pair of Pioneer 6X9's enclosed in homemade speaker cabinets constructed out of sheetrock and insulated with bubble wrap – I can make these for you if you like. Let me know.

A 10” Realistic sub powered by an Audiovox 200w / 80% THD amp with built in equalizer – I got this from my Bro’s IROC after he totaled it racing a Cellica

A HUGE 25" Zenith

A Sony Beta tape player

Don't flame me because I'm all money. Someday you too can have this system.

All kidding aside, congrats on the theatre! I live in mine (my real one)

You think that markup is bad, you would really be surprised to see how much there is over the cost to make the cable. I used to work for a place that made medical cables and even with that the markup is HUGE by the time it gets to the people buying it for a the hospital.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
