Westers PCM arrived today!

Got home today and UPS had made a visit....Went right for the tools and got my flat tip screwdriver and a 7mm ratchet. Took all of 10 Min to get the Westers PCM installed and fire the truck up and well.............Let's just say the jury is still out. It idled just like before and sounded just like before so I took it for a spin hoping to feel a difference.

I drove around at varying speeds for about 50mi, some WOT runs from standing to about 85mph, some passing on the Highway and some regular cruising. Now I know there is supposed to be some sort of learning process for the computer but so far I have not been able to tell the diff betweeen the stock PCM and the Westers.

I mean it even still has that lazyass 1-2 and 2-3 shift that it had before, not firm at all.

This is supposed to be the 93 Octane tune.

Now I am gonna drive this thing around for a couple of weeks and hope it gets better and if it does I will be the first MOFO back on this board to let you know and give Lyndon his credit but right now I am quite disappointed.

MORE TO FOLLOW!

99 SBEC Z71 5.3

You need to drive it like a madman for the first couple hundred miles. Jump on it all the time WOT. If you still don't feel any difference, give Lyndon a call. He has always made it right.

Good luck dude! I had the exact same problem with my Wester's tune. Only thing i noticed was i could spin the tires alot easier. But my shifts didn't change. And my mileage went down running 89 or 93 octane. I asked for only a small increase in shift firmness, but it didn't change. I exchanged a few emails with Lyndon, and he said he would get me out a new tune, but that was 3 weeks ago and nothing. I've about given up  and back to running 87 octane. The mileage is back, but what little performance i may have gained is gone. And now it rattles under load  Funny thing we both have 99's with the 5.3. I wonder if he has a problem with the tune for those trucks :wtf:

I agree, it took mine probably 200 miles to finally learn all the transmission changes, as well as finally quit pinging... No problems now whatsoever, I love the PCM, Lyndon rocks!

I'm done with Wester's. What a joke. 3 weeks ago, we talked about how I noticed very little change, and how my gas mileage went to cr** He said he would send out a new tune, never got anything. Sent another e-mail, oh I'll have to go back and look at your programming sheet. I WENT THROUGH ALL THIS WITH HIM THE FIRST TIME,:cheers::sigh: I just threw $400 dollars away. Anybody know how I can get my stock programming back?

Im having the same exact issue right now. Called and was put on hold for 10 minutes 3 times this week. From Mass, that cant be cheap.

I talked to Lyndon Yesterday and he said he would send out a new tune......He said I should not have to make it learn by beating the crap out of it and that there should be a noticable difference right out of the box.

Funny he didn't give me a tracking # like the first time......Maybe he just forgot...I'll call him Monday and confirm shipment..

I gotta give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

He also said this new tune will be more aggressive (first one was supposed to be a 93 Octane tune so I don't know how much more aggresive he can get)

Like 99Z71 said maybe the 99's don't respond well to the programming for some reason.

I will keep you updated, I just hope it doesn't take so long to get here like the last one..Took like 10 days.

Well, least I'm not the only one having problems with Wester's. But that sure doesn't make me feel any better. Maybe you guys will have better luck. I'll tell you, I am really disappointed after reading all the positive posts about him. d**n I hope tunercat comes out with a program for OBDII. I heard it on the way, Then I'll do my own programming. That's if I can come up with an interface cable to hook to my laptop. Of course what i paid already, I almost could have bought LS1 edit.

Mine's a 99 as well. My experience has been somewhat similar. I find Lyndon difficult to communicate with. Forget about a prompt email reply. And when I got a reply he was a little condescending, suggesting that my truck was out of tune, and that I should take it to the dealer and have the crank position variation relearned. Imagine me going to the dealer and asking him to help me trouble shoot an engine with a retuned PCM. I'm pretty sure they'd politely refuse to get involved. That said, I did get a noticeable improvement in part throttle response. No noticeable change in MPG (wasn't asking for it but was "assured" that the mileage would improve as well). Suburbans are big, heavy vehicles. I am not completely satisfied, and I wonder if I would spend the $400, knowing what I know now.

no need to tell them about the tuned PCM, just ask to have the crankshaft relearn procedure. if they ask why make up an excuse like you replaced the battery and it doesn't always start right

    • I tried tapping it.  This might sound like a dumb question, you should feel vibration or some type of noise when it turns on? Can someone please verify? Thank you all!
    • I feel better now for my own view point and actions or lack there of towards the dealership service theme reading your post and others. GM corporate is who offers the two free oil changes on the HD trucks and I bought my truck in Feb of 2025 and those oil change offers run out within 2 years I believe and I highly doubt I will be using either one of them. I had asked if I could officially give those free services to another customer ( a friend ) and they said no, its all a GM corporate thing based on the vehicle in question. What that service advisor did however was go into a little story about how such and such customer was denied engine warranty because he had done his own oil changes because then they are not documented ... you see where that goes and so an employee playing the game of scaring the customer into having the service work done there most certainly triggered my thought process. At a later date I did talk to the person who handles warranty claims at the dealership and she said to be sure to document the oil changes and keep receipts for the oil and filter ( coped the receipts from cases of Mobil oil and case of filters I bought from them ) and the vehicles VIN, the date of service, mileage etc and staple that together as a record I would give them if that was ever needed and I keep my own log book for services for each vehicle as well. Oh and about 8 months after I bought the truck the dealer starts calling me to offer a maintenance service since they haven't seen my vehicle show up on their system ... for the mere fee of 300.00 Canadian to change the oil and rotate the tires and a few other minor checks and I declined the offer, I get the call again a couple of months later for the same thing and she could tell I was not interested and she asked if they should take my name off the call list and I said yes, do that !.    By the way did you happen to keep your factory oil filter to open it up and see the surprises inside as I expect some will show up as per the odd little sliver of metal shaving and particles that the filter does trap along with bits of grey silicone sealer that come off of the inside edge of mating surfaces. I have cut open every filter so far on my truck although few miles but have changed the oil often and the second filter was vastly better with very little of anything, that first filter was the unsettling one as I expected it would be.
    • I get why they do this…but man…not ideal. I only extract on inboard boat engines because the drains are buried and even then I hate it because it’s easy to leave a quart behind with that method.   They should market it as an “oil refresh” not oil change!
    • I only get oil changed where I can watch. Valvoline pulls through the dipstick into a see thru glass. When done they show me the dipstick. About the only way they can mess up is using the wrong oil. But that secret wouldn’t stay secret long. Honda uses TQ wrenches on everything. You can watch through a plate glass window. Discount tires does that with tires. Trust but verify.
    • I would not argue that with you. It would be pointless to argue against the truth and you speak the truth.    My question and in fact the entire point of this thread is an exploration into the levers of wear which happens no matter how well we maintain our powertrains.    Some of these levers we exert a good deal of influence over which can and do result is lower wear, longer powertrain life. Some others we are sort of stuck with.    An engine is typically done when the ring to bore seal no longer is able to do the job effectively. Normally the first thing to go in a engine otherwise well maintained and adult driven is this seal.    Looking into the means, methods, products and attitudes that influence the rate of wear seems a worthwhile inquiry to me.
