BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey all,

I finally picked up my 2004 k2500 suburban and when I got home with it I discovered the accessory position had been moved from one turn back to one turn forward. Now here's the catch....With the key turned one position forward you have the steering wheel and gearshift lever unlocked and NO shift interlock function!!!!! I was in the back seat admiring my new dvd entertainment package when my 2 year son sitting on my wifes lap in the pass front seat reached over and shifted the truck into reverse and we all went rolling out of the driveway with nobody behind the wheel!

Be very careful!

i thought the brake had to be depressed before the gearshift would move....

What he said! Doesn't the brake have to be depressed to shift out of park? That is my main gripe with my wife's Durango. You can just yank it out of park anytime. There is no lock!

Actually there is a brake/shifter interlock on the truck. The brake pedal has to be depressed before you can take it out of park. I checked on our Tahoe last night. The only time you would be able to move the shifter is if it were already in gear or neutral. BTW, there is no lock on the steering column.

Your right - no steering lock....If you turn the key 1 position forward to the accessory position to listen to the radio or rse with out turning on the fuel pump pcm etc there is no shift interlock and you can pull it straight out of park!

What you said is true. At first i thought Yea__ right so i went out to the garage and tried it on my 2004 sierra hd. YEA RIGHT . The lever moves without applying the breaks! Whats up with that. That ain't very safe. So much for technology progress. I wouldn't want to be on a hill rocking to the radio and hit the lever and find myself crusing on down without power breaks or steering.

Just tried on both Tahoes here and that is right. What strange is that is the only position with out the lock, with the key in run or off it is locked.

Maybe if enough people mention it to GM (and the gov't branch that controls recalls) it will get fixed. Kinda pointless to have a "brake/gear" interlock that only works half the time.

Ok, out of curiosity, I checked out a couple other '04 at work yesterday. To my surprise, the brake/shifter interlock does not work on them in the accessory position. That can't be good......

PHEW.....The word is getting out!!!! I find it totally inconceivable that this design ever made it off the drawing board!!!!

If you feel its as unsafe as I do MAKE SURE TO POST IT ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE! Hopefully GM Pulls its head out of its rectum before someoness life and limb or property is lost!!!!!

I have brought this up with GM serveral times.. Simply put they dont give a crap.... I found this out after my break inter-lock failed and they dragged my truck up onto a flat bed to be towed. I talked to GM and asked if there was a way to get the truck out of park.. NOPE. Really funny that I found this little saftey concern...

The fact that it goes into nuetral without a problem is beneficial to us tow truck drivers. So many of these cars have that neutral safety switch and when the good ol fire department cuts the dam* cables, you can't get the vehicle out of park. But on the flipside, safety-wise, yea its a big issue. You'd think someone would get on their butts about that. With little ones around, maybe get used to using your emergency brake?
