bbellowsZ71 Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 what is a stock air box for. what does it do. I was wondering if i could take it off and if it would hurt anything
02denali Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 whoa hold on there. the stock air box is the filter box assembly. if you are going to remove it then you will need to replace it with another one. no filter will spell trouble. you could by one of the aftermarket ones or build your own. good luck.
BuiltNotBought Posted May 26, 2004 Posted May 26, 2004 I wouldn't remove it without buying a cold air intake to replace it.
Mac8 Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 02Denali, That is exactly what I want to do but haven't been able to find that type of elbow. Where did you find it? My next step was to look at Freightliner company. It looks like you used the elbow and small piece of tubing and then used the stock pieces. I can't justify spending $250 on something like this. That blue filter and box look like ones I've seen on ebay for around $60. Thanks for any help, Chuck
miket Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 If it's like the Caprice one I just did you can find the parts at Home Depot or Lowes.....I am looking at doing the same on my 8.1.
maroonsilverado Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 im just gonna say the obvious. if you build your own make sure it's completely air tight and sealed. a grain of dirt/sand can wreak havac on your motor. i know that kinda goes without saying, but if you're asking if the stock airbox has a purpose.......
Weller Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 Has anyone made a Home Depot air intake for their truck? I'm trying to figure out how to make something for the 4.8L. I think I'll have to use the stock tube from the trottle body, since it sits so close to the fan. Any advice how to proceed from there? Thanks!
02denali Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 i got the elbow and tube from here}http://shop.airflowonline.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv elbow is 11.69====4" 90* tube is 4" intake tubing===7.69 the box and filter is off ebay====39.99. its not the best but it works and all was under 100.00
Mac8 Posted June 7, 2004 Posted June 7, 2004 02Denali, Do you have electric fans? It looks like you do from the pics. I don't think that elbow will work with the fan shroud.
02denali Posted June 7, 2004 Posted June 7, 2004 yes i do. and yes it will be very hard to make a custom tube with the stock fan on there.
Mac8 Posted June 7, 2004 Posted June 7, 2004 OK, thanks. What fan kit are you running and what did you gain in performance?
02denali Posted June 7, 2004 Posted June 7, 2004 i am running the flex 292's. since i have put the 292's and the asp i think i have gained a lot of performance. look at my truck and mods below to.
mazingo Posted July 16, 2004 Posted July 16, 2004 WORKING ON A HOME BUILT COLD AIR SYSTEM TOMORROW. USING SOME SCRAP ALUMINUM 4" PIPE AND k&n RE-0870 UNIVERSAL FILTER GOT SIXTY BUCKS IN IT ALL. LOOK PRETTY SIMPLE BUT I AM LEAVING THE STOCK TUBE FOR NOW. I PLAN TO RPLACE IT WITH 3" PUMP HOSE FROM WORK. PERK TO THE HOSE IS IT HAS A SPIRAL-GROOVED PATTERN ON THE INSIDE FOR STRENGTH. THE PATTERN MAY ACT AS A TORANDO TYPE THING. TIME WILL TELL. THE 4" PIPE IS JUST TO GO BETWEEN THE maf AND THE FILTER (RE-0870 HAS A 4" OUTLET). tHE K&N FILTER i CHOSE IS 6-5/8 TAPERING TO 4-5/8 DIAMETER BY 9" LONG AND FLOWS 890 CFM.
hercman Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 Any one got any pics of a CAI for a 98 5.7L? I wanna make one but that verticle air inlet is giving me fits.
