8.1 remote oil filter

I have found it virtually impossible to change the oil filter on my 8.1 without a trip to the burn unit. I usually drain the oil but let it cool overnight before attempting the filter due to the placement of the filter above the exhaust pipe and oxygen sensor. I would like to install a remote filter kit but am looking for a quality setup. Has anyone had experience, either good or bad, with a particular unit?

I thought about adding a remote oil filter to my 8.1 4x4, hoping to make changes easier and run a larger filter. I bought a perma cool kit from JC Whitney. I should have checked into the oil filter it is made to run before buying, because when I got it I found that the filter on my Craftsman tractor is bigger than this thing holds (think half a coke can)!!! Guess I'll just keep getting burnt changing the filter in the stock location --- I have found that using a large zip-loc bag while removing the filter can help make things a little less messy

My 2000 K3500 with a 350 is not too much better. I wear leather work gloves and a thick long sleeve old cotton sweatshirt when doing it. I have not gotten burned yet!

Something that might keep you from getting hot oil on you is to punch a hole in the bottom of the filter with a big nail/hammer. It will leave a nice controlled stream into the drain pan. Once the filter empties out, then it will come off without a big Exxon Valdez event.

As far as touching all the other hot surfaces under there, gloves I guess.

I have tried that before, it helps a little, but with the 4x4, I still end up getting oil all over the front differential and U joint

I bought the same kit but never found a good place to mount it. I bought it to use a larger Mobil 1 filter. I now see that Mobil 1 makes a filter for the 8.1 (M1-111), the only problem is finding them. I ordered a case through Autozone and was told they don't have any idea of when they might actually get them. There is a K&N filter available which I have begun using in place of the AC Delco's. I would be very interested if you find a way to use the relocation kit. Until then, I will just keep using an old sweatshirt.

Not that I am aware off! I use delco or fram, which ever is availble at the store at change time

AC Delco flters are fine,but Fram filters are absolute junk. Next time you buy one get a spare and cut it open to see for yourself. There is no way I'm putting a filter with cardboard endcaps on my truck.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the AC Delco, I just wasn't comfortable running it more than 3,000 miles. I also wanted to extend my oil changes out to 5,000 miles since it seemed like a waste to be throwing away Mobil 1 synthetic oil every 3K. I tinkered with changing the Delco every 3K and the oil every 6,000.

I lifted my truck with an RCD lift and I use the Baldwin tall oil filter on my 8.1 with no problems.

Thanks for the ideas. I used the zip-lock bag idea and that worked well after the oil cooled to prevent major spillage.

Here's the background story. My friend has a 90 something S-10 that he left at my house while he was away from home. As he is not a good PM guy, so I decided to do an oil change for him. Well the filter turned out to be a factory remote filter located behind the front roll pan behind a little door labeled OIL FILTER. I thought that the engineer at GM responsible for oil filter locations had been forced to change the oil on his own. It was great, hardly even had to bend over to change the thing. BUT, I guess they forgot everything when I started messing around with the filter on my 8.1. Dinky filter, suck location. At least it's not on the engine sideways!

I'll let you all know what finally happens, I really want a better location AND a larger filter.
