One thing after another

Now my truck is leaking antifreeze. Drop by Drop. Out of the water pump...

Called 2 places, both quoted me a price of around $50 for the part and $200 for labor.

Any way I could do this on my own? Any special tools I need? Any advice?

ps 88 jimmy s15 2.8l auto and all that jazz

You can probably do it yourself if you've done work on engines before, etc. You might want to go to Pep Boys or similar auto parts shop and take a look at a manual for your truck and see if the water pump is something you think you can tackle. Good luck.

They aren't that hard to do. I did one myself (10 years ago). If you feel comfortable tinkering, it should be no problem.

If you've got access to a basic set of tools you should be ok. Just take your time and move everything out of the way.

I'd definitely review a repair manual, such as a Haynes guide before and during replacement.

Like Mark and Pasta said,a water pump is not a too terribly difficult job.

If you have any mechanical experience you can have it done in under an hour but it should take no more than 2-3 hours at the very most IMO.

Typical labor charges.

Most shops charge between $75-100 per hour for repairs and they have a book which alots a certain amount of time for certain repairs.

They have your water pump down as a 2 hour job hence around $200 labor.

Yeah...I know how them 2 hour jobs can escalate into week long projects. ;)

Oh yeah never start a project on Saturday, by the time you need some small part, the parts store will be closed and won't open till Mon....unless you want to drive 40 minutes to the big city. :idontgetit:

sorry for the lack of reply

yes i attempted it and yes it was a success =)

it took about 3 days to complete (had to work during my down time) but i got everything off, had to make several trips to autozone for the right tools.

changed out the waterpump. while i was in there i replaced the radiator too. and also decided to get my a/c working by replacing the compressor, accumulator, and the lil filter thingy. had a friend put my system in a vaccuum and add freon.

my truck is running perfect now. no overheating problems. a/c is blowing cold for over 2 weeks now. still have a small oil leak though out the rear gaskets which i'm not worried about since it's only a few drops a day.

thanks for thinking about me i haven't had any trouble with it since so i'm keeping my fingers crossed
