Rear Differential Options

I have a worn rear end on my 1972 GMC Pickup. It has a new 700R4 transmission with very firm shifting. What rear end recommendations for replacement of the rear end can you offer? I would like to achieve decent gas mileage and still be able to carry some heavy loads.
