service engine soon light!?

on my '01 2500HD with the 6.0 motor, going down the highway the other day and just about the instant i hit 71,000 miles the service engine soon light came on! any clues? i did the gas cap check and here it is 6 days later and the light is still on. anyone got any ideas?

You'll have to get the codes read, there really is no way around it without replacing every part in the truck.

You can take it to Autozone and they will check out the light for your for free. They cant tell you the specific, but can give you a good ideal. It will proberly have something to do with the emission system such as EGR or oxygen sensor.

looks like i was at autozone while you were recomending it. i got a code PO327 knock sensor bank 1 sensor 1 low input. what the %$&*%)%)* does that mean!? and what do i need to do if anything to correct it? the guy there told me to disconnect the battery for a few mins. to clear the code and see if it comes back. so now what? anyone got any ideas.

Why didn't he just clear the codes for you if he had the reader right there. Clear it and see if it comes back. If it does see if it is the same code and fix it. A lot of timess they will not come back. Depends on if it is a single or double error required to activate the check engine light.

You probably just had some bad fuel to make a knock in the engine. Did the engine mis or stutter just before the light went on? Other than that your knock sensor could be going bad, usually located on the side of your block. Autozone has cheap code readers for sale too. Although I picked up one off eBay for under $30.
