Side mirror

I should have believed the sign at the car wash when it said "we are not responsible for GM truck and SUV side mirriors." It was a sign that I shouldn't have gone thru to wash my truck. The guy folded in the mirror and when I got out to put it back after the wash, it was flopping around and wouldn't stay in place. So I got home and tried to pull the glass out and see what was wrong inside.... CRACK!!!!! "F**K!!!!" So a new piece of glass is $50 at the dealer but I have a cousin who works in "exterior trim and ornamentation" for the GMT800 platform so I gave him a call and he's going to see what he can find around the office.

In the mean time, I got the old glass out and need to put the big nut on top of the spring and get it to hold so that the mirror will stay in place. Anyone have any tips? The spring is pretty strong and there's no easy way to get on top of it.

Hopefully this is the only thing that will go wrong on Friday the 13th.... (Knock on wood)

Thanks,

Matt

I had the same thing happen to me. luckily I got the glass off with out breaking. I couldn't get the spring to go back together either. I ended up just putting 2 screws through it into the base that attaced to the truck, of course it would nolonger fold. I was going to by a new mirror off e-bay, but I have since traded it in for a trailblazer so now its the dealers issue.

Because I wanted to take my mirrors apart to have the black trim painted red, I called a manufacturer who makes replacement mirrors for GM. My plan was to disassemble the mirrors, have the trim painted, and then reassemble. The guy at the factory says there is a special machine that compresses the spring and it would be practically impossible to do it myself.

Good luck!

I'm told that there's a GM service tool that is used to compress the spring. It's called the "Carwash Kit" since the they usually break off at the car wash.... funny, eh?

When I get the part number for the tool, I'll post it.
