Alright, I went onto Chevy's website, and I see they have a 295 hp. 5.3 and a 310 hp. H.O 5.3. Why an't they make the 310 hp engine standard?!?! GM's sales would boost slightly and they would have a stronger engine, and I imagine along w/ the exta hp it has extra torque too. This makes no sense!!!!!

BTW, what does th H.O come in anyways???

The 5.3 "HO" (RPO CODE L33) Is only available in the 1500 Ext.Cab Short Bed 4x4 models and without Quadrasteer.

The torque is the same at 335 lb.ft @ 4000 rpm.

310HP 5.3L and a 330HP 8.1L. Its seems almost rediculous to me that they cant pull a few more HP out of an engine with almost 3 more litres to play with. There is absolutly no reason that these 496's should be anything less than 500/500. Especially when you have a 5.3L ripping 310HP. Just doesnt seem right.

The difference is RPM. The 5.3 makes peak HP at 5200 RPM, the 8.1 at 4200 RPM. For a truck that actual hauls some considerable weight around, where most 8.1 equipped vehicles are targetted, a more reasonable comparision would be at around 2500 RPM.

5.3 @ 2500 RPM

approx 150 HP

approx 300 ft-lbs torque

8.1 @ 2500 RPM

approx 220 HP

approx 425 ft-lbs torque

So, you can see when trying to haul a load down the highway, the 8.1 has the 5.3 beat by nearly 50% HP.

its like would you rather plow a field with 1000 chickens or 1 strong ox

would you rather pull a trailer with a formula 1 car or the dmax

those are little extreme  but the extra 3 liters move the usable power down lower on hte rpm scale, at least on my 8.1 2/3's throttle nearly feels the same as full throttle, rob pretty much hit the nail on the head though

GM's gasoline trucks have almost always been like this.

Look at the old 7.4 454 trucks. The 90 model trucks. 454 - 7.4L only had like 240HP, the 350 - 5.7L had 210HP, and the 305 - 5.0 had 180HP. The amount of TQ and the RPM locations that they put out power were all different, but the Peak HP wasn't all that different. I understand the argument though, the Dodge V10 in their SRT-10 RAM is putting out 500HP and it's only 8.3L, but it's also a V10 (and costs a great deal more than ours do), so it's a little different. I know the 7.4s were heavily restricted due to fuel/exhaust guide lines on EPA regs, so they had a low comp ratio, somewhere in the 7-8:1 range I believe.

You would think that with the 6.0 LS2 putting out 400/400, and the new 427 LS7 putting out god knows what, that they could give more out of the 4.8/5.3/6.0/8.1 in the truck lines..

Oh well, I guess someone some where had a reason for it...

I think the H.O. with the Vortec engines stands for High Output.

Did you what you quoted?
