I went with the K&N FIPK 2 for my intake. It's a real quality piece and the intake piping on it is 4" so there's no lack for air. My truck seems to have gained quite a bit of off the line power with the intake and a 40 Series Flowmaster. I wouldn't get one of those intakes off ebay personally. I was looking at a lot of them and most of them were only a filter and heat shield, there was no piping going to the throttle body.

Hey, Rob...welcome to the forum! I'll take a stab at your questions and maybe some of our brethren will share their thoughts, too.

I'm assuming your Jimmy has the 4.3L V8 (like my '99 ZR2 that I had until recently), right?

Regarding intakes, you can increase the incoming air flow just by replacing the stock paper filter with a K&N reuseable filter. If you want to replace the stock airbox, you can go with an open or closed system (the stock setup is closed because it has a top and no other openings except for the intake tube. Open systems, such as the K&N kit, may get rid of the airbox altogether and have an open-faced filter on the end of a custom intake tube, or they may have a box without a top. In that case, the hood is supposed to seal off the top of the airbox which prevents hot air from the engine compartment from entering. Air still comes in from the stock location but a conical open-faced filter is used.

Closed systems, such as Volant are similar to the stock setup which allow air to enter only from the outside of the vehicle. Again, an open-faced filter allows more air flow to help increase power (a little).

There are a LOT of aftermarket intakes for sale. You can find good bargains on some that flow as much (or nearly as much) as the more expensive kits, but most people seem to be getting either a K&N, Volant, AEM, or UPD (NSV) kit.

Keep in mind that a 6 cylinder is only going to sound just 'so' good, you know? Not quite like a V8, in other words. On my ZR2, I had a Flowmaster 40 series muffler with dual exhaust which sounded GREAT at idle or low RPMs but not so great under acceleration. Other guys have used Magnaflow, Gibson, or other systems with similar results. I also had JBA shorty-style headers which helped the tone somewhat, but not that much at higher RPMs.

My advice? Use the Search feature to see all the previous conversations on this board about exhaust and intake sytems. You'll learn a LOT!!!

Good luck and enjoy your 'new' ride!

thanks for answering my ?'s this is my first v-6 i had a 2.4l in my last car so im not sure what to expect with this one, the intake on my stratus made a sound like a vacum cleaner, but the magnaflow kinda evened it out and gave it a nice growl to it. i think im gonna leave it alone for a little while till im postive on what i want to do with it. thanks again
