Transmission fluid change

Need to know how to change fluid in a 02 z71. I want to get all the fluid out of the T/Converter. I read on this site about removing a cooling line and running the vehicle and waiting for the fluid to run clean. Any instructions on which line...how much fluid to purchase and any other tips?????

Doing a flush in the driveway can be catastrophic for the tranny if not done properly. You need to be able to add fluid at the exact rate that it comes out at. Most shops hook a machine up using the cooler lines at the radiator than catches the old fluid and pumps in new fluid in it's place at a controlled rate so the level never changes. If you don't want to spend the $70+ to have it flushed, I'd just be suire to change the filter and the 4-6 qts that comes out with it at exactly the reccomended intervals. There's no easy way to drain the TC on these trannys, so a flush is the only true way to change it all. But do the filter first, that's a must!

If I had to do it all over again I would have saved myself the $80 it cost me and did 4 pan drains at each engine oil change. Then you get pretty much all of the old fluid out and the cost is less. Plus it doesn't put as much of a shock on your system going from old fluid to clean fluid, that is if you have a good bit of mileage on your vehicle. I did mine at 8K miles on the truck. I just wanted to get the synthetic in soon.

So change out the filter, clean things up, refill, then just do a fluid change at the next three engine oil changes.

I disagree that doing repeated drain and fills accomplishes what a flush does. Everytime you drop the pan you're adding 5 clean quarts to about 7 dirty quarts which gets mixed with each other. The only way to get 100% clean fluid is a flush.
