8100 Engine shuts while driving

I have a 2001 Suburban K2500 with the 8100 engine. (52K miles)

 

In the last 3 days, while I am driving, the engine just shuts off.

Happens about 1 time per day.

The longest trip I have taken is 45 minutes of driving time, since the problem started occurring.

 

The few times it has occured it was within 10 minutes after pulling out of the driveway.

- once occurred at 60 MPH

- once occurred at idle, sitting at traffic light

 

 

While the truck is still rolling, I can put in into neutral and just restart the engine and everythings continues just fine.

 

There is no hesitation, and the electrical power seems just fine.

 

It appears as if the ignition system just intermittently shut down.

I can restart the engine immediately without a problem.

 

There is nothing out of the ordinary on any of the gauges or on the message center.

 

I have had it at the dealer and they claim that they could not find anything wrong.

 

Any input is welcome.

I would suspect the fuel pump based on your information.

This happened to me once with my 2002 2500 Avalanche. I just filled up and jumped back on the interstate. About 5 miles down the road it quit. My first thought was the fuel pump even if the truck only had 1800 miles on it. They can go bad. It would not restart then. Called Onstar and had a Flatbed sent to pick it up. After setting there for about 15 minutes it started up and ran fine. Called Onstar and they ran their diagnostics on the truck and it had no error codes. Never happened again, My new 2003 2500 Avalanche never happened once.

 

My conclusion was after I filled up, I put the gas cap on using my other hand while talking to someone admiring my truck. I guess it did not seat correctly.

 

One other thoght, if the burbs uses the same tank filler as the 2500 Avalanches this could be the problem. Chevrolet had problems with this and had a differnet style of fill tube on the Avalanches. Also in both of my Avalanches there is a check valve in the inlet of the main tank. I ended up pulling it out and throwing it as far as I could. Reason for that was it would not take Gas very fast.

Not sure if you have solved this or not by now, but they do have a problem with the crank angle sensor on that motor, and it shuts the truck down right now. It can even restart immediately, over and over.

FYI, if the gas cap wasn't on all the way, it would throw a code. Something like "emission control intake, minor".

 

My neighbors 02 8100 Avy is doing the same thing. He replaced the sending unit/pump assembly, and it's still doing it.

 

I'll ask him about the crank sensor.

Exact same thing happened to my '02 8.1, it was the crank position sensor. it would throw no cods that the dealer could find. The dealer (under warranty) replaced the fuel pump, the fuel sending unit, and the injectors. It would still do it, left at the dealer for a couple of days and they were finally able to get a code for the CPS. Hope this helps.
