Getting that mushy feeling

Evenin' fellers .    Got a q for ya .  Acouple of times now the brake pedal in the truck seems to go soft and mushy when braking hard.  This wouldn't be the ABS would it ?  Climbed a hill today and had to back down it (the road to nowhere ,  know what I mean?) the brake pedal did this about half way down and left me wondering if I was gonna lose it or not ! I made it down alright but I would like to know if this is normal.  TIA

If it was the ABS you would feel the pedal push back rapidly, my old s-10 actually sounded like it was mooing when the abs kicked in.  With my new silverado I can feel the abs kick in occasionally, it feels like the pedal is vibrating and braking actually becomes stiffer.  I'd say check the fluid level in you master cylinder.  Then check your pads

Mine does the same thing.  I have 94,000 miles and it happens about twice a month so I never brought it in.  And they wouldn't have found it anyway.  I am gonna flush my braking system anyway and see if that helps.

Had my brake system power flushed.  Wasn't cheap, $80, but the mechanic said he has seen a lot of people who tried themselves to flush the fluid and there in his shop because of the ABS.  Seems there is something to it.  Anyway, it made a difference in my 96 with 74k miles.  After the flush, new front brake pads and manually adjusting the rear drums, I don't think my truck stopped this well new.
