Instrument Panel Woo's

Ok, here is the situation. Every now and then my instrument panel goes crazy with the following symtoms:

- Fuel gauge goes to empty(when I know it has fuel).

- Seatbelt light comes on.

- ABS light comes on.

- Shift indicator does not show what gear its in.

- The information panel flashes, Battery, Low Fuel and Security.

It has done this off and on, it usually just goes back to normal. But this morning it did it and the information panel stays on Security all the time now.

Has this happened to anyone else? Could the instrument panel be going bad?(Good time to get one with a trans temp gauge.) Could it be the aftermarket alarm I have?

Well went out and checked it 1 1/2 hours after turning it off and the security light is still on.

Is there a difference between the 1999 and 2000 instrument clusters?

Well, after checking it again and turning the key off and on a few times it seemed to clear itself.

I had a truck that the security light would come on and stay on for a bit then after shutting it down and restarting it away it would go?

I'll look in my manual because I think it said something about this...

"Passlock is a passive theft-deterrent system. Passlock

enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinder is turned with a

valid key. If a correct key is not used or the ignition lock

cylinder is tampered with, fuel is disabled.

If the engine stalls and the SECURITY message flashes,

wait until the light stops flashing before trying to restart

the engine. Remember to release the key from START

as soon as the engine starts.

If the engine is running and the SECURITY message

comes on, you will be able to restart the engine if you turn

the engine off. However, your Passlock system is not

working properly and must be serviced by your dealer.

Your vehicle is not protected by Passlock at this time. You

may also want to check the fuse"

Might help on the security thing.

To answer the one question, there is some sort of electrical difference between the 99 and 00 instrument cluster...I thought that a modification had to be done to get the trans temp guage to work in a 99, that's why I got mine from JP Customs so I didn't have to bother.

You may be experiencing a problem with the cluster itself, I believe I have read some threads about it. Also, when your security light stays on, check and see if your interior lt is on also. I had a problem once where the interior lt would stay on when I closed the door, and the security lt stayed on also. Turned out to be the courtesy switch which is located in the latch/lock assembly...cost about $48 from the dealer.

Thanks for the info about the difference between 99 and 00, I noticed it on the JP web site there are different part numbers. My interior light does go off. This has happened three times so far, two time after driving for a while and once when starting it up in the morning.

Only thing with using a newer cluster in a 99 truck is that the air bag light stays on. BUT the trans temp gauge needs no modification to work in a 99 NBS truck. I have an Escy cluster in my 99 and the trans temp works falwlessly.

I would check your battery cable as well. It will cause all sorts of stuff to go batty on you....VERY intermittantly.

My 92 gauges were jumping all over the place, or completely dying when the cable started to go.

Just food for thought.

You know if your air bag light is on for any reason your air bag will not deploy if needed in a frontal collision.

Hmm. You a GM employee? Maybe all the other people with Denali or Escalade clusters in 99 trucks are dead. I checked with AutoTap and a TECHII and found no trouble codes. I even scanned the BCM. I guess Ill find out one of these days if my airbag doesnt work.

I did just that last night and the positive side was corroded. Cleaned it off, so I will see what happens. Although getting a new instrument cluster w/ a trans temp gauge would be nice.

There was an Escalade cluster on eBay last night with a Buy-It-Now of $185. I thought it was a steal! Just keep your eyes peeled on eBay, one will pop up cheap again!
